Welcome aboard, Nitemare.

It is generally accepted that for snow and ice, turfs are better than ags or R4's. That being said, you can find a hundred threads here debating that point. I don't use chains because I have a paved driveway and I don't want to tear it up. But those that run chains say it will really push a lot. 24" is a lot though. :) I'd have almost been tempted to get the blower instead.

Enjoy that new tractor!

Welcome to TBN. Had a BX1860 before my current BX25. Plowed snow with it using turf's without chains. Driveway is blacktop and I've had no issues with traction up to about 14"-16". Just leave it in 4WD. There was one time I plowed for a neighbor that has a gravel drive and traction wasn't quite as good. I would definitely use chains if plowing a gravel drive. But, with that last storm (Nemo), I really needed a snowblower. Had to put the FEL on to clear it. Good luck with your new tractor.

Turf tires do great in the snow. Chains will mar up the finish on a paved diveway a bit, but if you don't spin them the damage will be minimized. Overall, I think that you'll have a good setup. It may take a bit more time when you get the really heavy snow, but you'll be able to do something with it for sure.

Enjoy the new beast!

Nice machine. Myself, I prefer a snow blower over a plow and I've tried both. If your in an area that gets a lot of snow you run out of space to push it besides having to go back & forth to clear it. With a blower it one and done, no extra passes. I have a long blacktop drive and it's nice when you can blow it 20-30 ft away. But that's just my preference. Others feel that plows work just great for their situation.

thanks everyone for your replies im gettiing a little excited like a little kid waiting for it to get here probably by the weekend im told as for the chains i had a conversation with the salesman regarding them he told me at first to try plowing without them that the ballast box would probably do fine but later on there were some last minute issues over the final price i had to take the floor model so to make a long story short he threw in the chains for the misunderstanding

Congratulations on the tractor, and welcome to the forums!

I use the plow on my BX (turf tires, no chains) and have been really pleased with it. I do have rear ballast in the form of liquid filled rear tires. Having said that, I've never had to try to clear 24" of snow at once. In that large of a snow event, I'd recommend getting out there in the middle of it, if at all possible, and plow, then later again. I think doing it in stages would be much more manageable.

As was mentioned, the key to plowing for the winter is making sure you push snow far enough back early in the winter. As the winter progresses, those piles and snow banks can really build up.

Have fun!

We had 27" inches in my area, the first 5 or 6"'s were heavy stuff. I have a lot of area to plow and that was a bit much for my BX with 60" hydro blade. We had to get my buddy over with his pickup and plow. Actually had to dig his blade out a couple times so he could back out of the big piles. The prior storm was 12" and no problems other than one small incline, but that was without chains.

One tip, do your initial runs with the blade straight, then when doing clean up you can use the angle. The BX is a bit light in the front and trying to push heavy snow while angled will push the tractor sideways. Overall you'll be happy with that set up.
