I probably got what I paid for; however, i'm hoping for some insight. I bought a lower end PH digger for about $420 and i'm having trouble getting it stuck. My bx2200 will suck that auger into the ground like there' no tomorrow but it goes straight down and then is stuck fast. I assume the more exp models had reverse - this one does not. Any suggestions?

I may be wrong but the only way to get reverse on an auger is to have a reversible pto. The auger just connects to the pto so I couldn't see how it would have the option to reverse itself. If I'm wrong I'm sure someone will jump in here! What brand did you get and how does it fit the 3pt hitch? Good luck!

To keep that PHD from sucking down so fast and sticking tight. Just use your 3 PT hitch control to slowly lower it. Make sure you are not pushing the handle all the way into the float position. Also bring the auger out of the whole and clean it off before the flights are completely covered with dirt. this should keep it from becoming stuck fast.

Run it at slower speed. I dig my holes at just over idle. That will give you much better control. You can also adjust the rate of speed at which the 3pt lowers with that little knob under the seat.

Finally - get yourself a big pipe wrench. I always have my 18incher with me when I'm digging holes. It will help you unscrew the auger until you can lift it out.

... and by the way the more expensive post hole diggers dont have reverse on tractors. Only the hydraulic ones on skid-loaders and such as far as I know.

Kodiak and Old Wanker are both right,
I run my engine speed probably about 50-60%.
I have had better luck by using the control to drop the digger a little and then let it settle then dropping a little more.
Depending on your soil type Old Wankers way of adjusting the drop speed on the knob under the seat should also work, with most of the soil I have dug in it is better to let it drop fast but not very far at a time. I do keep a pipe wrench handy just in case it gets away from me and screws itself into the ground./w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif
I have used my BX to dig well over a hundred holes and practce does help.

What type of post hole do you use?

If you are asking what brand post hole digger I have it is a farm star with a 9" auger.
I did not have to modify it at all to work on the bx.
Hope this answers your question, if not I'll try to do better next time.

I purchased it at Orscheln Farm & Home Supply.
I believe it was on sale at the time for $349.00 + about $90.00 for auger.
