I have a bx2200 that has been running fine. Yesterday I went to start it up and it will start up great, but once I let the key go and it moves back from the start position the engine promptly quits.

I did a lot of tall grass mowing last weekend so I wondered if this may just be an issue of grass clogging something? That will be my first thing to try this morning (as well as taking the compressor and blowing grass off anything i can).

If someone has an idea of what this may be I would appreciate any help.

thanks.

PS: also, if i start it up and hold the key in the forward most position it will continue to run until i let the key move back.

You have a blown fuse. I think it is 30 amp and hangs from the wire harness above the oil filter.

There are several possibilities.

Occasionally the starter switch can kick back from the start to the stop position when released. It may need to be adjusted or replaced.

It could be the blown fuse mentioned above, with just an anomaly causing it to blow.

It could be the blown fuse with an underlying problem that will cause the fuse to blow repeatedly. I had this saga with the BX2200 in and out of the shop for two years. The starter switch burned out. The stop solenoid burned out. It would crank and not turn off. It would start and not continue to run. Finally, they decided that when they installed the Woods BH6000 backhoe, something in the wiring harness was stretched enough to cause an off and on short. This caused all the other burnouts. The dealer replaced the wiring harness and everything now works normally again. If you replace the fuse and it continues to burn out, you will need to look for possible shorts. Hopefully, you can just replace the fuse (regular tab fuses can be found at any auto supply store) and that will be the end of it. Good luck, and let us know the outcome.

Even another possibility.....

Sounds like the engine stop solenoid or the relay that feeds it is having an issue.

Make sure all of the wires are connected. Have someone else start the tractor and observe the solenoid's action. You may have to take off the engine cowl.

You may be able to disconnect the arm that shuts off the fuel but since the BX doesn't have a lever that can be pulled from the seat to stop the engine you'll have to get off and manually shut off the fuel.

As you mentioned, there may be debris keeping the lever from properly working but it is unlikely since it will start. It sounds more like an electrical problem.

Anyway, stop solenoids are famous around here. Do a search and lots of information will come up.

Check to see how many wires go to the stop solenoid. Theres either 2 or 3. The stop solenoid is on the end of the fuel injector pump, it's the only device on the pump w/electrical wires.

1) if it's a 2 wire solenoid, the problem is either the timer relay or key switch. This is ofcourse assuming all the safety switches are good and aren't bypassed.
(note, the engine will run with the solenoid removed but won't shutdown via the keyswitch)

2) if it's a 3 wire, it could be a fuse, the wire to the solenoid is loose/open/damaged or the solenoid itself is bad.
(note, the engine will not run without voltage to the working solenoid)

Good luck
Dave

Uh oh. Tall grass?

I hope I'm the only one this ever happened to and your problem is something else - and cheaper. Maybe just the fuse.

Tall grass wrapped my BX24 drive shaft and somehow snagged the fuel pump wiring. Ripped it out of the harness. Blew the pump/instrument panel fuse in the bargain. The symptom of no pump was that it would fire (some fuel in the lines and injector pump working?) but not run through.

Replacing the fuse was cheap. The harness, not so much :( After the repair I went to finish the mowing job and grass wrapped the forward drive shaft and wiped out the pinion seal. Grrrr.

I don't know your model or how well protected the underside might be. I'm now running 3 Bro-tek plates and a home-made front pinion/u-joint protector -- and mowing with my fingers crossed.

Good luck,
Z.
