i was wondering if you should check the fluid level by twisting the dipstic all the way in or by just sticking in without threading it in,,,, /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif seems like my dealer told me to screw it in, but cant remmember. I know its a stupid question, but i didnt see it in the manual. i just got my bx back from the dealer a couple of weeks ago for a front axle leak. and just had time to fool with it and i checked the axle fluid and it seemed low even with the dipstick screwed in. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

Hi
I have a BX 22 and while I don't know the answer to you question, I think if the dip stick reads low with it screwed in I would think that means its really low. I can see it reading overfull when its screwed in, but not reading low.
I also have a Honda walk behind mower and I have to check the oil with the stick un-screwed.When the oil level is correct it always reads overfull when it is screwed in.

I hope this makes sense and helps.

I agree with Greg. Check in unscrewed position.

I will be the disenting opinion here, I guess. /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif I have never seen a dipstick that wasn't meant to be checked when fully seated so my vote is to screw the sucker in completely, then remove it to check the level.

As I will get stoned for this /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif I will say my thoughts here. I have seen both ways of various equipment.

My thought on this is that the BX is small and the front axle does not have internal pressure; so, you could fill it up to the highest point/level. The delta in fluid level is so small, it is nothing to worry about. Without knowing the ID of the axle, the extra 1/3 of a qt will not hurt anything. Hell, you could fill the axle completely and nothing will happen. Maybe get some overflow when the fluid heats up.

Does the front axle have an overflow. or a breather. /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif, cause i took it to the dealer to fix a leak i thougt was comeing from the front axle, the mechanic said it was a seal. Well its wet again after mowing for about 2 hours, and pushing alot of brush into a pile,Dont know if i did somthin to make it leak or filled it too full.

According to the shop manual it has vent plugs. You remove them when draining and filling the unit. There doesn't appear to be any type of vent that is always open and could be leaking from overfill. I'd probably call the dealer and see what they have to say. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

When the dealer was going over my BX with me (when it was delivered) it was pionted out to me to check the front axle level with out screwing in the dipstick. I didn't ask about it specifically it was just one of the things that they show everyone. I would have assumed that you check it screwed in so it stuck out in my mind.
