To pull a 5' Box Scraper to do some serious gravel driveway leveling or should I go with the 4' version?

I'm running turf tires on my BX2200. I have a 4' box blade and that seems to be the traction limit for me. If you have bar tires you may get enough traction for a 5'. Its not a question of power just not enough traction.

Have you got your tires loaded?

Dr Dan,

I have a B7100D (16 hp/ gear drive/Ag tires) that will handle a 5' yard box just fine unless it gets totally filled with dirt and/or the scratifiers are down.

My guess is that the BX2200 will handle about the same amount of gravel whether it is in a 4' yard box that is 95% full or a 5' yard box that is 75% full (note that I made up the % numbers to make a point and didn't bother to accurately calculate the volumes). This assumes that there is not a significant difference in weight of the 4' and 5' yard boxes.

There are some rental yards that rent yard boxes. I'd recommend calling around to see if the option to rent one for a day is available for you.

DrDan, I would say with my experience with my BX that it handles the 4 foot 7548 Boxblade very well but a five footer I do not think is a good match for the BX. If you think you need a five foot Boxblade you probably need a bigger tractor. I use my BX to smooth, level my drive and also to put out something in the range of about 35 tons of gravel onto it--maybe it was 30 tons, forget already. Why do you need a five foot? It seems to me that the BX might be perfect for your situation, being lower, it would be easier for you to get in the saddle and back off and all around easier for you to deal with but then if you need something bigger you need something bigger--BX is a fun little machine though. Dr. Dan,

I've got a 4' box scraper that I pull with a B7500. I have on several occasions gotten "too much stuff" in it, and run out of traction. I would imagine that I could pull a 5' box, but I'd have to be a lot more careful about how much stuff I loaded it up with. My B7500 is pretty well loaded up with weight too, I estimate that it's tipping the scales at around 3200# (FEL, box, filled R4's), add another 200 for me /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif.

So I would bet that a 5' box would be a bit over the top for a BX.
