When I'm hauling my trailer on the road or mowing, I usually run pretty high RPM, for good MPH cruising or good blade RPM, or so it sounded and I thought. However, yesterday I decided to see how close to full power I've been running, so I pulled it all the way down. Whoa!, She was really running fast. Obviously, I've been running nowhere near full throttle. I'm assuming the governor limits this to the max rated speed, and I can't overspeed.. right? She really cruises in Hi range at this speed... and I can make my manure trip much more quickly, but I don't want to damage anything.

I see this come up quite a bit and I just thought I'd offer some of my thoughts/comparisons.

Average vehicle RPM@65MPH W/overdrive 1800-2200

RPM for most air cooled lawnmower/tractor engines 3400-3600 (recommended mowing RPM)

RPM for most generators/welders idle or full throttle.1700 (idle) 3400/3600(max or fast idle) Diesel 2600-2800

Dale JR. on sundays for 4-5 hours 7000-9000 rpm

Chainsaw 7000-12000 rpm

Allison T56A-7 turboprop engine RPM 13,280, prop speed 1021
RPM.

Average Kubota compact diesel rated rpm 2400-2800

My point is basically all engines are designed to run at a specific RPM range for extended periods of time and provide a long service life doing so.

Engine/PTO rated speed is to keep the PTO shaft speed within the 540 RPM range.

If you're working the machine, use all the engine power available, that's what they build them to do. That's where you get the rated H.P./ hyd power./PTO H.P. That's where they reach the temperature and fuel efficiency they were designed to produce.

If you're hauling the garbage to the end of the driveway, obviously you don't need full RPM, but it's there if you want to use it.

If the engine and machine are warmed up to operating temperature rated RPM is at your disposal.

Some guys prefer to run just shy of max or rated RPM and that's fine too as long as the engine is'nt bogging under the load for extended periods of time. I really don't think running at a lower RPM is going to extend the service life of the engine significantly. Running at a lower RPM and bogging the engine for extended periods of time however will shorten the life of the engine.

If you want the power, use the power, all day long if you want to. That's what it's there for.

Crank it up and let the governor work for you.

Well since its to wet out to do anything I had some questions about running the tractor. Idle, what is a good RPM for sitting still while picking up sticks or loading the bucket by hand ect. I notice my tractor shakes a lot at slowest setting. I bump up the RPM just a notch. I let mine warm up at this setting also, is it better at higher RPM (water and oil pumps working better?) Is it better to leave it run at idle say for 5 minutes or shut down and restart?

Sure leave it running, bumping it up to get rid of that vibration is exactly what I would do. Just remember to set the brake, and if you really want to be safe put the range selector in neutral as well. Letting the machine run for a few minutes while your clearing or whatever reason is'nt going to hurt the engine.

I doubt idle hurts anything, but as others have said, the shaking drive me nuts too, so I bump it up a little. I always leave it running when I'm unloading mulch out of the bucket by hand, clearing the mowing path (mower off of course), etc.

I bump it up till the engine shacking quits also. Idling at a fast idle should not cause any problems but if it is going to be more than a few minutes i think shutting down might be better---more than 5 equals a few I should think. Why, cuz that Hobbs is clicking and burning dollars and that is the only thing it would hurt. J
