I'm a new poster as of today but have gotten many great tips over the past 4 years from this forum. A little background, I have a BX2200 with 347 hours on it. I use it to maintain 6.5 acres of SW Virginia property. I was mowing with my MMM on Thursday and suddenly the MM PTO stopped turning. I removed the MMM and inspected for any problems underneath but could find none. The lever that controls which PTO you use makes a grinding noise when you try to select the MM PTO. The rear PTO appears to be fine. Anyone else run into this problem? I would like to hear from any one who may shed some light on my problem. It does appear to be in the lever. My wife says she heard a loud noise as if I had hit something. I don't think so!

"stopped turning" as in RIGHT NOW, slam on the brakes stopped turning, or as in stopped like it does when the PTO is disengaged?

It sounds like a belt slipped off a mower deck pulley. Did you check those on top of the deck? It happened to me recently when a belt slipped off one of the pulley's and jammed itself under the pully and between the bottom of the pulley and the mower deck. The PTO pulled it until it was wedged under there enough to stop everything on my mower deck and it locked up so tight the engine would immediately stop when the PTO engaged.

You did not indicate if you noticed the pto shaft turning. Remember your PTO selected has 3 positions. The proper one to select is MID position. If it slipped out of the mid selector, you will not see the PTO shaft turning and it's a simple fix to move it back into position. (Just a thought)

As I was mowing, I noticed the MM PTO had stopped turning. When I tried to engage it it would not turn. Moving the selector lever (Mid, Rear, Mid/Rear) to Mid and the PTO will turn with a grinding sound as if it is not totally engaged. Is there some kind of internal clutch? There is no belt problem with the deck.

Best case scenerio is that the PTO selector wasn't engaged all the way and then popped out.
With the engine off and the pto selector in neutral, try to hand turn the rear pto shaft a qtr turn or so then try to engage the pto selector.
I've only used my mid pto but on occasion will move the pto selector through it's ranges to work it some. Sometimes when I do this it will not go back into the mid position. It seemed like the internal splines weren't lineing up. Thinking that the rear pto would be easier to spin than the mid, I spun it a 1/4 turn and the selector easilty went back into all the ranges.

Good luck

Yes, there is a clutch inside the transmission that runs the PTOs. I think you need to have your dealer take a look. Don't run it if it makes a grinding noise, you could be making matters worse...

Good luck...
