I was mowing around the house today after sharpening the blades of my rottery mower and when I went to disconect the pto, the housing was very warm. About 20-30 minutes.
This is the first time I had tried to disconect the PTO right after mowing, usually I had hauled the tractor a few miles, mowed than hauled it back and I cooled off before putting the mower and tractor up. The fluid level is normal by the way.
Question?
is it normal for the PTO housing to get very warm?
and did it cool off before while I cooled off and just never noticed it?
Or do I have a problem and need to haul it to my dealer, they are closed by now and I am sure someone knowes the answer to this situatuion.
Thanks

When I disconnect my backhoe after using the tractor for an hour or so, the lines are so hot that I can't even hold them long enough to disconnect. I use a rag as a insulator. I believe that this is normal. Realize that anything over 110 degrees will feel very warm to the touch, Never checked the hydro oil temperature before, but knew that it was hot enough to burn me if I tried to hold onto it for very long.

Thanks Junkman, That was what I was hoping,
I can touch the case, but it is pretty hot (does not Burn flesh)
I will take my temp probe with me when I mow my rental property tomorrow and see how hot it really is when I finish before I haul it back home.
I guess hauling it down the road several miles lets it cool off.
I expected it to be a little warm, and there is no cooler in the hyd. line like there is on my truck (F-250 with the trailer package, transmission and oil coolers etc.)
I figured someone in the TBN has figured it out at some time.
Thanks again,
JimC

Ask my 4 year old how hot the rear PTO gets on my BX-23, even if the rear PTO isn't being used! /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

I never noticed the PTO itself, but the gearbox on my MMM where the PTO goes to is very warm to the touch after mowing 1/2 hour. Not burn yourself hot, it's I-don't-wanna-touch-it-any-longer hot. Considered normal. /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

The PTO/Trans housing is the hydraulic fluid reservoir, as well as the gear case. As such, the heat generated by the hydraulics will be dumped into the case. The case is finned and the cooling fan (connected to the engibe input shaft) blows on the case to cool it. So in a short answer, the case will get quite warm. Things like stalling the hydro (hi gear and can't move uphill for example) or holding an implement stalled (lever pushed and no movement due to load or mechanical stop) will send hydraulic oil over a relief valve and greatly increase the heat load. But in general, the normal heat dissipated will warm the case quite nicely. 120 deg on a hot day would not be a surprise.

Hydraulic oil temperature will run approximately 100 degrees above ambient temp. ie...80 degree outdoor temp= 180 degree oil temps

My feeling is your estimate is a bit on the high side. 180 is close to a danger point for hydraulics. O-rings and other seals typically are buna-n material, and 180 will greatly shorten life.

Most industrial stationary hydraulic systems operate at 110-120 degrees, and mobile systems at 130 to 150. There are localized hot spots that may be higher, but running at 180 as a nominal temperature would make me worry.

Jimc,

The BX2200 has a fan that cools the "transmission" (the works in the back). This fan is subject to damage from stuff that kicks up underneath. If your hydro oil seems too hot, you might check to make sure the fan is okay.

Thanks TBNers, The rain finally quit amd I ran the mower for awhile and the temp of the case got up to 50c or 60c depending on how long and fast I ran it. Thats 122f to 140f for us guys that have not converted to the metric system, my probe is in centigrade so I had to do the conversion manually.
Someday I will learn to ask the TBN before I start to worry about things.
