Another in my series of hydraulic education classes.

I replaced my power steering hoses recently and now am having problems with my steering.
I think that I may have introduced some crud into the lines when I fed them though to the steering cylinder. Would contamination effect the cylinder in a serious way? After installing the new lines, I went all day working with the FEL and everyting was fine. Swapped FEL and grader box for the MMM and mowed about 3 acres, let the tractor sit for about 20 minutes and lost the steering. Moved the wheel to the left and right limits a couple of times and then I could steer again. Now back to no steering.
Fluid checks OK, and was changed as per maintenance schedule. Tractor has 914 hrs.
Any ideas?

You say no steering. What happens if you turn the wheel ? Dies it spin free or is there resistance ?

Sounds like the seals in the steering cylinder could be leaking -or- you've still got alot of air in the hydraulic system.
Theres a procedure on how to use the 3ph to bleed off the system in the owners manual. Try that 1st.
Good luck

It spins free - and I'll try the air bleeding procedure, hope that works.

I don't get it, today I mowed for about an hour and my steering was fine. Fluid was at proper level before mowing.

I would think that a hydraulic cylinder would either work or fail, or do they gradually start to fail before giving up completely?

I let the tractor idle for about 5 minutes before mowing, just to make sure that there is not any air in the system, per the manual.

Your tph lever isn't stuck in the raise position is it? That messes up the whole hydro system.

Theres an o ring in the steering cyl that wears and causes just that symptom. - - When the symptom arises, try turning the steering wheel very quickly. If the wheels steer its the o ring.
