After sitting a couple of months I decided to crank my BX2200 yesterday. Turning on the ignition gets the satndard results (gages lighting up, ticking), but the starter does not turn over. When charging the battery showed no results, I took it to Autozone to verify dead, then picked up and installed a new battery. Same results, nothing. Just verified the two safetuy switches seem to be functioning properly. Wondering now about the starter relay and the ignition switch (though everything else seems to work from switch). Need help with diagnosis. How do I verify juice reaching starter, where is starter relay, and how do I verify it is working? Your help much appreciated. ??????????????

Like with most troubleshooting techniques, having the right tools is important.
Do you own a digital volt ohm meter (DVOM), or any type volt ohm meter? And possibly more important, do you understand how to use it...? KennyV

standard response from all of us:

1. rock hst pedal to make sure it's centered. try again
2. move pto engage in and out a few times to make sure its switching off. try again
3. check safety seat switch(es) to make sure its depressed all the way. try again
4. verify battery ( you obviously did this as its switched out)
5. check the fuse.
6. if all else fails, use jumper cables to make a short from red power on starter to the starter key wire. (careful here- if you never done it, sparks and the tractor starter will startle you. (be sure the parking brake is on.)
7. since its a bx2200 you might have a bad key switch

Quick test I've found to be handy. Turn on the switch, turn on the headlights. Do the lights work? If not check battery connections and ground.
If the lights work, turn the switch to start. Do the lights dim or go out? If so then the switch is working. Again, check the battery connections. If you have a poor connection, the lights etc. might work but the starter might not be getting enough current to start. If the lights don't dim or go out, start with checking the safety switches.

Yes, I have a a DVM and know pretty well how to use it (novice). Anyway, looked over the wiring diagram and did some more troubleshooting. Only have two safety switches and both checked okay. Checked fuses. Narrowed it down to either the starter or the switch. Regarding the switch everything else works and the lights dim on attempting to crank. SO, I took a mallet to the starter, and voila, it now cranks. May work for a long time yet, but guess I need to be looking for a replacement starter.

Careful with the mallet ... these starters have permanent magnets glued to the inside... if they crack or come loose it will get pricey.

I wouldn,t rush out and buy a new starter so quickly. It doesn,t take much rust and corrosion to freeze parts up tight. Try using the starter a few days in a row, and see if it cleans itself up. You have nothing to loose, and it might save you a few bucks. Sounds like your tractor sitting idle without being started is the problem. Try to find some use for it during the months your not cutting grass with it.

I'm with Guido455... I would not buy a new starter.
I would take the one you have apart, clean it & lube the bushings...
Starters Last a LONG time, and when they fail... it is a small part that needs replaced. Not the whole enchilada... KennyV

Last time I had this happen, I was generous with the can of contact cleaner.

Hasn't happened since.
