Will the BX2230 hydraulics handle a 3 pt logsplitter? The one I bought comes with a 3 position valve, what is that and should I get a 4 position valve. What does it do? the salesman did'nt explain it very well.

By 3 position do you mean the lever for the spool valve has 3 positions, neutral in the middle and one position on either side? Or do you mean something else?

How are you attempting to connect this? In place of a backhoe connection? Or in series with a backhoe? Or via a remote? Or something else?

How many hoses are NOT connected to the cylinder? 2 or 3?

Is this a factory designed and built log splitter or something you put together?

What kind of cylinder is on the splitter, single or double acting?

We need more info.

It will work but it's going to be very slow. What size cylinder (hydraulic ram) are you going to be using? The larger cylinder you use, the more gallon per minute rating your going to need. I built a log splitter several years ago and used a 5" cylinder. To run it I purchased a 16GPM 2 stage pump. Even at this flow rating the splitter is no speed demon ( too much speed is not healthy anyway!). If I'm not mistaken, I think your BX's output is around 5.8GPM. Remember, hydraulic pressure(PSI) is the push on the ram and Flow (GPM) is your speed. To get an idea of how much force you can apply, take your hydraulic system pressure times the square inches of surface area on your ram. As an example we'll use a 5" cylinder with 2000psi of system pressure. Surface area is figured as "radius squared times pi" so.. 2.5"x 2.5"=6.25...6.25 x 3.14=19.625. Therefore we have 19.625 square inches of surface area for our 2000psi of hydraulic pressure to push against. As 2000psi is one ton of pressure per square inch, our system will make 19.625 tons of pressure at the ram head. Hope all my rambling helps!! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

The invoice says it is a Kubota loader with a 3 position valve, or an option of a 4 position for $200. I don't know what this means. As for the logsplitter, it can be found at www.northerntool.com. It has a 4" hyd ram. I was just curios if it would work.

This subject has been discussed before and I had set this site aside. Maybe it will help you out some. I haven't contacted this site myself as at the time I was looking for information only.

The difference in your loader valves is in the regen circuit. You can read about it at the thread listed below. If you ever want to mount front attachments you had better opt for the 4-way valve now. I don't understand why the upcharge is $200 when the Kubota MSRP is only a $50 difference between the 2 valves.

3-way vs 4-way valves

I assume you bought this 3pt log splitter from Northern. As was mentioned previously, I don't think the BX2230 has the hydraulic flow to operate this efficiently. You would also need some type of rear remote or backhoe connection to operate it.

No, I did'nt buy it, just looking at it in the catalog. I know I will have to bring down some trees in the future and was just looking at my options.

has anyone purchased a timberwolf splitter? specifically the 3-pt / pto attach model? I'm going to look at one today, but was just reading on the northertool website that they're selling a 20 ton honda engine powered splitter for like 1299.00. The timberwolf product is 1800.00 starters... plus, any pros-cons of running off the tractor or not? (btw, it'll be powered by a 20HP yanmar, attaches directly to the PTO). Thanks. -Art
