Hi, I just bought a bx2230 with 250 hours on it. When buying it, I ran it through its paces, noticed some whine in the tranny, but everything seem to work good enough. Getting home, I changed all fluids, filters etc. Used super udt and cleaned the screen. Power seems much better.
The tractor really whines going uphill with a load (54" belly mower or light fel work) and slows down even in low. I would think this is not normal. Any Ideas?
thanks

If you are in high range (rabbit) when this occurs, it is pretty normal. That range is pretty much limited to transport, and level ground unless you have a lot of RPM. I found when I had mine that I was shifting into low for just about all of my sloped areas, and was usually content to stay in that range most of the time.

Thanks for your reply Chuck. I just tried the same little hill that I mow with my snapper mower with no problem, and I jacked up the rpm's and at least I was able to spin some tires. Not Possible before. I am still waiting on my manual so I am being cautious with the throttle I guess. I still don't think the shutter should be there though.

Don't be afraid of using RPM with a BX. The tractor was designed to run for hours at a time at PTO rpm. Yours is already broken in so there is no problem at all. You will find that the hydrostatic transmission, loader, and other things will all work better. You should be mowing at wide open throttle, or just slightly under, and loader work should be at 2200 rpm, or more. You can tool around the yard at much lower rpm, especially in low range, but the tractor will complain about it on slopes, etc.

Like others have said, don't be afraid to rev it up a little. I mow with mine at 3200 rpms or a little higher.

Thanks for your replies guys. I was ready to take it to the shop....
The 2230 does not have a tach, so I guess full throttle would be around 3200rmps?

Everyone is right rev that sucker up! ;) My BX2230 is strictly a mowing machine, no FEL and just a bagger system.
Its a fantastic mower!

Well, I got back on the tractor today and kept the RPM's up while working. The trottle pedal sure shudders when under any kind of load and slows down or stops on hills. Does the hydraulic pressure affect the transmission or just the FEL?

Do you mean the tractors slows down or stops on hills when you release the speed control pedal? That is normal. If it slows down or stops with the pedal depressed, check that the e-brake isn't accidentally engaged. Also, I must reiterate what has been said previously that you should be in low gear range for doing any real work. Rabbit gear is reserved for travel on smooth surfaces, such as driving over to your mother-in-laws to mow her field!
If you have checked the above, and it still shudders, the manual will show you how to adjust the speed control pedal.
Best of luck!
