May seem like a silly question, but can you mount and use the backhoe bucket backward?

I don't have my BX23 yet but I was dreaming up all of the things I could use the backhoe for. My wife wants to transplant some large bushes and reaching over them won't work. Instead of reaching over, use the backward bucket like a spade shovel to scoop out the rootball without damaging the foliage.

Will this work? If not, how would you tackle this task with the BX? /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Eric,
I don't think you would have much luck getting everything to line up with the bucket on basckwards. I don't see how it would be done. But , if it can be done, the guys here will know.

In my limited backhoe experience, If you cannot get all the way around the bushes, The bucket is small enough to make a small trench around the bush as far as you can and then lift out by hand /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif or tie a strap around the roots and lift with the bucket.

You could certainly mount the bucket backwards, but wouldn't be able to control it since the hydo arm that controls its open/close orientation (pardon the layman's language) connects on the back/bottom of the bucket. So...no, it will not work.

i am not real experienced with backhoes, but i don't think it will work. hydraulics would be bassackwords(for moderators) but an interesting thought.

I was initially thinking, why could it NOT work? "so what if controls work backwards...that's learnable" (or swap hoses)

None the less, I'm looking at a side pic of my hoe and she's very curvacious.... /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif oops, wrong picture. /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

I'm now looking at a side pic of my BACKHOE and I think I could rotate bucket "backwards" on the pivot pin. However, the iffy part is connecting the ram. The pin on the bucket would be on the 'underside" of the dipperstick, whereas the ram assembly, is on the UPPERSIDE of the dipperstick.

So, off the cuff, to do it casually, it ain't gonna work (IMHO). That said (still looking at pic) I think if I didn't mind customizing the bucket, or welding something, that you could cob SOMETHING together but I dont think it would be practical, especially if you are swapping around to carry those rosebushes or something with plans of putting it BACK properly. now back to curvacious... /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif
