Hello,
Haven't been here in a while. My BX23 has been acting up lately with it idle, doesn't matter if it's cold or fully warm up. Yesterday, after completed the snow throwing job, I went and put the BX back down in idle but the engine started to choke and die, had to re-start but will die unless I increased the throttle up right away. I'm going to replace the fuel filter today and see if this help. Any suggestions besides fuel filter?

Check the air cleaner, make sure it clean and some family of mice didn't decide to build a nest in there. With mine, when the fuel filter starts to clog, it idles fine, but won't make good power. I would go ahead and change them, there are two.

Thanks for the reply Dodgeman,

I did checked the air filter all was good there no mice's nest and only one year old.

Is there any pre-cautions I should be aware of before replacing them fuel filters? Hopefully, it's just a straight forward job.

Have the new one handy, that way it doesn't make too big of a mess when it leaks all over. I just plugged the open end with my finger for a few seconds. Make sure you are getting a free flow from the tank. I took my finger off for a moment, and got a good flow, which means the tank isn't plugged.

There is also a small metal pump that looks like a fuel filter. Its the lift pump and you don't need to mess with that.

I don't have any good ideas on the poor idle, maybe just make sure the small lift pump is working. You should hear it clicking when you turn the key, but don't start the tractor. I've heard of them failing, but the main pump has enough suction to keep it running at higher rpm's but maybe not enough to keep it running at idle.

Thanks again Dodge man,

Just finished replaced them filters and WOW! smooooth idle now, I can tell the engine purring now! :).

Here is my summary
The rear one under neath the floor is a piece of cake
The front left engine one is best to go from the left side of the engine cover, loosen the engine cover screws will give you better access.

Just get ready with some fuel line plugs because fuel will flow out once the filter has been removed. It's best to pinch the hose from upstream.

I'm happy that my idle issue was just the fuel filter.

BTW, the rear fuel filter was completely clogged :YIKES:

Thats the way mine will get, almost plugged. In my opinon, they are to small.

All the more reason to purchase a Racor fuel water separator funnel or mount a Racor water fuel separator on your BX and solve the issues with water and dirt.

One trick I use is to have one of the uncut plastic spouts that come with the small tubes of caulk or silicone gasket material handy. They make great plugs for any size hose as the "steps" in the spout will fit almost any small fuel hose.
