I have a BX23 with about 500 hrs. on it. I use the backhoe and loader mostly to dig ditches and move dirt. Here lately, when the backhoe or loader bottoms out...say at the end of a lift, or if there is a lot of pressure on the bucket or the loader...there is a loud squeal that doesn't stop until I let off the controls and release the pressure. I also think I've lost some of the power in the backhoe and bucket.

Does anyone know what might be wrong?

Thanks.

Are the fluids topped off? Any signs of leakage under your BX?

Sounds like your relief valves are opening up. Shift the valve to the extreme and see if you can determine if the sound is the same as when you shift full forward and full back, and side to side.

My fluids are all at required levels and there has been no sign of leakage.

Not sure what "shift the valve to the extreme" means? There is no squeal unless I'm at the start or end of a lift.

Meaning hold the valve back until it squeals, or push to left and right side until it squeals, otherwise to the maximum travel of the lever. One of the positions may have a float mode. This way, the hydraulic pump is trying to push fluid, and is at it's limit, and if there was nothing there to relieve the pressure, something would break, so a relief valve is put in the circuit to protect things, and relieve when pressure is at a set limit. That sound means stop what you are doing, you are at the limit. Sort of like the sound of the power steering when you are at the limit of steering wheel travel.

j j has a point. I suspect your relief springs are weak causing your releif to kick in sooner causing weaker lift or end of work. Perhaps it wold be time to test the hydralic pressure now. do a search here on BX shim, there were several threads on that. adding shims may resolve your issue.

I would agree with radioman. Check the threads for setting the releif pressure. I checked mine a while back and found it to be about 250 pounds low of the recogmended 1850 PSI.

I made a very simple test fixture to do the measurement. The glycerin filled pressure gauge was purchaced thru Grainger for about $16. I had a spare quick-disconnect lying around. I disconnected the top front loader quick-disconnect and put the gauge in its place. Pull back on the loader stick and hold until the gauge tops out. Make sure that the tractor is warmed up before testing the pressure. After taking the reading, push the loader stick forward to releive the pressure, and remove the test gauge.

The adjustment of the releif pressure is about a ten minute process. It requires removing the left rear tire to get the releif valve. Shims under the spring adjust the pressure. My valve had two 0.4mm shims and it took another 0.4mm shim to bring the pressure up to the specification.
