Well I thought I had my BX23 hydraulic vent leak cured but it is back. While mowing this weekend I caught that wonderful aroma of smoking hot hydraulic fluid. I tipped the seat back and sure enough there is hydraulic fluid bubbling out of the vent.

I let the tractor sit overnight, checked the hydraulic fluid in the AM and found it is about 1/2 way between the lines. I did a little troubleshooting and found that it leaks when I am mowing a really really steap part of the yard. I would say that it is 45 degrees plus, 1:1 for sure and then some.

I could start to see dots of dead grass in the yard about 3" in diameter where a drop of two of fluid must have dripped off. So now I put a diaper on the BX23 and have resigned myself to asking a dealer to help solve this problem.

I would be frustrated if I had to live with this because of the steapness of the slope that I need to mow. I know the machine did not do this the first year I owned it.

And yes, I have all of the fan blades and the tractor is clean as a whistle.

Any more thoughts? Anyone ever replace the vent?

Now, keeping in mind i do not own a BX, and don't know what the vent looks like.... i'll make a blind suggestion. Would it be possible to put a piece of rubber hose on the vent.... and run the hose to a higher point on the tractor? Similar to what you might see on an auto or pickup differential (axle) vent?

Or a small container to capture the oil, sort of like a radiator reservoir....

I was thinking a small coffee pot... since it's percolating :) You could even filter it, so that you can just dump it right back in the fill hole after it's finished brewing.

Lower your fluid level to the bottom line on the dipstick and se if it still comes out. You'd still be in the green zone.

All great ideas.

The fan to cool the hydraulic reservoir is there and intact. I took the hose and cleaned the fan and the case behind to get built up debris off.

I did consider some type of reservoir or taller vent, pretty tough to rig up. The vent is in a tough spot to get to.

I will wait to see what the dealer finds. It would disgust me to have to "rig" something up to make it work the way it should.

Hi:

Is the vent hole in the big red fill hole middle upper part of rear end?? Think if so would get an extra and rig up the taller hose thought at full would be about 4-5 inches lower you must be on some STEEP hills What is is it dripping on hot to smoke smell??

the vent is directly behind and under the seat on the BX23, it looks like a rubber ring set in the tractor with a white body and on the top of the white body is a red cap about 3/8" across

it really doesn't smell smokey but rather just super hot hydraulic oil, it lingers in your nose for a few hours even after your done, all of the hydraulics are super hot to the touch on my tractor

if the oil grtting super hot , sounds like the pressure setting is way to high
