Hey all - got the $14 gauge from Grainger and went to look at hookup pics (Tommu56?) and they're gone.

I'm thinking... if I plumb it, Tee'd in line in the FEL, then operate a cylinder until relief operates (noise) - wouldn't it be exactly the same as if I just deadheaded it (the gauge) inline past the hand valve without the Tee? (It would save me a QD fitting, or maybe I could just hard pipe it in for the test...)

THX in advance

how is this.

hard pipe will work but I couldn't find a place that it wouldn't get knocked off make sure you use good pipe fittings rated for the pressure and these are hydraulic fittings on my gauge assy.

OK - thanks - but still I'm thinking...

Is there a difference between an (open hand operator) valve going to a Tee and then on to a closed, extended cylinder, or just going to only the gauge? (For testing only, besides not being able to use the cylinder.) Seems like it's all deadheaded anyway.

Is the Tee and second connector necessary for test?

either way you are "dead heading" the system.
straight to the QD without the Tee is going to be more accurate, if you have a leaking cylinder(internally) you are going to get a lower reading because if fluid bypassing thru the cylinder.

After messing around for 2 trips, looking for fittings, I just took one off the FEL temporarily.
I got a reading (let's say 1710), but no noise, at all. I was surprised.
I am used to a noise at mechanical limit (too much weight or too much travel) that seemed to come from the hand valve area - I assumed the noise was the pressure relief and I was just hearing the PRV's action at the valve - like the noise was carried through the fluid. But without a FEL and just the gauge - I get no noise and a distinct stopping pressure (1710 consistently) - so I think I'm at the PRV limit.
Why quiet now, and noisy with FEL attached and working?

THX all!

Factory spec. for hydraulic relief valve activation is from 1778-1849 psi

With the FEL off, the only relief you now have is the 3pt relief. Did you leave the FEL valve on the tractor.

If so, you might try bypassing the FEL valve.

With the loader on, it should not be relieving with all valves in neutral. Leave the gage in the system and monitor the pressure as you operate the machine.

Why not install the gage at the IN port of the loader valve.where you can monitor the pressures and trouble shoot the hyd system.

Maybe it is not a relief sound you are hearing.

JJ - Thanks for trying to help me.

In proper order...

With TLB fully equipped and assembled, and using the FEL, I get a whine at mechanical or weight limits - it really sounds like the hand valve mechanism is groaning.

Then , with FEL off (and hand operator mechanism still attached to frame) and BH off (and loop re-attached) and gauge attached to 1 of the FEL ports - I push FEL hand operator and gauge shows right at 1710.

I can figure how to fix that. What I can't figure is why - in this setup - I hear no noise, no whine in the FEL operator. I thought I was hearing TLB PRV relief through the operator when fully assembled, and expected to hear same noise in this test mode.

So I'm questioning... was it a flow noise I was hearing in the FEL operator (and now since no flow, no noise)?
And also - I am really at PRV limit since I hear no noise (I read of others hearing noise in rear)?

You will can hear the relief activating at the rear if the 3pt is raised up and held there.

Whatever valve is relieving, you can hear it.

Have you tried the screw driver trick of listening to something. Take a screw driver and put the point on anything you want to listen to, and put your ear to the handle end of the screw driver, and the sound will be amplified. It will allow you to hear better.

Try it on the relief valves.

They also make stethoscopes for listening to engines noise, which would also work for hydraulics.

There should be no difference to the flow with or with out the FEL attached, with the valves in neutral. . If you umplug the hoses off the work ports, you should plug the work ports.

Did you say you only hear the sound at your FEL lift limits, and if so , that is normal if you exceed the load or you max the cyl's.
