Know this subject has been addressed again and again but I still haven't been able to get my head wrapped around it yet!

I tore the propeller shaft boot on the engine end. I got the new $2.00 boot. Can I unbolt the 3 bolts in the front of the propeller shaft, drop it down slide the flange off the shaft replace the boot then reverse the procedure. Or is the procedure much more complicated?

If this is the drive shaft between the engine and the transmission, I am afraid you are in for some bad news. :(

That is the one.

Has anybody actually removed the shaft, disassembled one end, reassembled and reinstalled it in a BX23? Or is there an existing link with this info?

What is required to remove the shaft on a BX23?

I have a parts manual and the joint appears to use 4 balls to transfer force and handle angular deflection of the shaft 2 C clips and various wahers and O-rings.

After removing the shaft from the tractor with joints attached can the shaft be slipped out of a splined part of the joint for boot replacement or must it be disassembled?

If joint disassembly is required what are the traps/tricks?

Search "HST FAN" and you'll have an eyeful of what it takes to remove that shaft. Not pretty, you have to remove the main deck and lift the engine off its mounts.

Start with this thread : Link

Here's a notable quotation:
Kubota left a couple of steps out of the procedure that are imprortant. About half way down, it should say "insert gun barrel into mouth 2 to 3 inches" then it sould say "pull trigger".

Thanks Danner

My fan is OK so I am hoping to be able to disconnect and lower the front of the shaft (may have to raise engine) then remove joint from the shaft from underneath and replace both boots.

I will be ordering Bro-Tek skid plates when Richard get's back from his Road trip.

Please keep me posted on your efforts. I am also considering a skip plate, or some kind of home-brewed shield under my BX26.

Will do.

I consider myself pretty careful with my equipment and have shut my tractor off 5 or 6 times in the 6 years I have owned it for strange noises (always traced to objects on or lodged near the HST fan or vines wrapped on the shaft).

The threats are numerous any twine rope or cordage, vines, sticks, twigs, branches, wire, even rocks.

Unless you use your tractor exclusively on level dirt/sand or on concrete driving down the road I strongly recomend shields even if you have to make them. I now wish I had.
