Which is better for the front axle in a texas climate? I also plan to use standard diesel rotella 5w-40 oil. I assume that's fine for my area.

I asked my dealer about that and they said use gear oil even though the OEM manual says SUDT. Hydraulic oil is just too thin in my opinion to do any good at lubricating slow turning gears. When installing gear oil, it is best to heat it up a bit so it thins out and even then it may take a long time to travel down to the bottom of the axle so it is best to keep accurate measurement of the amount you put in and check it often after changing to make sure the level stays up.

Either will protect just fine. The UDT has no problem protecting the gears in the trans. A lubricant's film strength is more important than how thick it pours out of the jug. Most "average" gear oils don't have to pass the stringent requirements that a top shelf UDT such as SUDT, Schaeffer 315, Amsoil , and others have to pass.
In a BX you'll never know the difference though.

The owners manual says either one and I feel good with that. Your running/moving/rotating/spinning gears in an oil bath at a slow speed.
As has been mentioned, the lubricant falls/fills slow and tricky in the BXs so fill it up with either SUDT2/UDT/Gear oil. Run it for a while and recheck/refill level and run more and check again until it finally continues showing full. It's not leaking, just filling all the cracks and crevices.
I use and have always only used the oil I buy at the Kubota dealer that Barlows sells me and it has Kubota on the jug. Not saying I wouldn't use another oil specific to/for diesel engines if there was not a Kubota dealer for 500 miles.
