Well here in Pa, the time has come for me to say Goodbye to my garden. Today we pulled out all of the tomato plants, onions, and almost everything else. We left some small Red Beets, and our pepper plants, which are still growing. This is the first sign for us that summer is gone. Next week is the first week of Football, sign number two. As hot as summer was I hate to see Winter. I really don't like cold anymore. I guess I'm getting old. At least I'll have a bit of fun with plowing snow this year. (if we get any). Everyone enjoy your Fall.

Hopefully not yet. I have melons that have not ripened yet, corn just starting to ripen, all kinds of cucumbers. Hopefully it will last another month.

I agree with you about not liking the cold weather. Never used to bother me, but give me
the warm weather anytime now. Still have some tomatoes & peppers, cabbage & broccoli.
Corn didn't even make this year. Hey, maybe the Steelers will keep us heated up this winter!
Looking forward to Monday night.

My fall garden is coming up. Set out tomato plants about 2 weeks ago. Planted string beans last week and those are coming up already. Haven't tried a fall garden in years but thought I would give it a try. We typically don't have our first frost until November. That's the good side of Texas weather. Saw on the weather last night where the temp on that day 2 years ago, , Sept. 3, 2000, was 109. That's the bad side.

We make the most of ours. The leeks will stay until late November. We just finished planting another crop of lettuce (you'd be surprised how well it does - even with snow on the ground), and we also panted some rapini - not sure what the North American name is - brocoli rob? It also does well with snow on the ground.

The dry weather did in the corn, cucumbers, and the tomatoes were not as full. I still managed about between 9-10 bushels of Tomatoes. The Romas were a big disappointment, but I tried Big Mama from Burpee, and they did great. They are a great tomato for canning. I also did well with the Big Boys, Beefsteak, and Heatwave Brands. It got to the point where all that was left was small ones. I've gotta hand to you guys, who stuck with the gardens even during winter. I'm about all gardened out by now. Thanks for the posts. Keep growing those veggies.

The tomatoes are just stsrting to ripen up here. I've picked about 4 so far. It looks like this weekend about 50% of them will be ready for picking.

I have large cracks in my yard - big enough the fit your hand in. I heard that the Great Lakes were down by an average of 40" this year - that's a lot of water.

It ain't over till that first frost comes down. /w3tcompact/icons/wink.gif

Out/Down here in SE PA I've got the worlds smallest corn plants with tassles.. kinda' cute, about 18 inches high, with little tiny ears. A victim of the incredible dryness. I did manage to produce plenty of tomatoes, "Moutain Gold" seems especially imprevious to lack of water. My potatoes really got hammered by potato beetles, but I still got some. It's a hot,dry summer I'm happy to have behind me.

Hey DFB,

I always wanted to ask someone in the veggie business. How the heck do you get those perfect tomatoes? /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

Hi upgw,

Sorry to hear about the garden. There's always next year. Stupid dry weather did something to all of us. We pray for more rain in 2003. Thanks for the posts.
