I'm at the point with the cab I'm building that I need to decide on how to heat it. I've read where some have brought back heat using a heater housing arrangement. Does this work well? Does it keep the windshield clear? +'s and -'s? I have also read where people have installed heaters off the engine cooling system. This is do-able since I have available ports off the water pump. Maybe someone out there has done both and can share their experience. Thanks

Ben:

JC Whitney has some nice auxillary heaters. They plumb right into you water lines. I looked at the catalog and they have 12 volt blowers on them. That might be the ticket. If not, a can of STERNO will provide some heat.

I used to have an old VW Beetle and that's how I defrosted the windshield in the winter, a can of sterno. I made a holder that mounted right next to the windshield. Did a pretty good job. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Years ago, someone told me you could drink sterno if you strained it through a slice of bread. I never tried it, but that would keep you warm too. /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

If I remember correctly, the vagrants refered to Sterno as "squeeze" /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

VWs, like Model A Fords ducted exaust heat into the cab. Then there are ceramic heaters that plug into a cigar lighter socket and blow hot air on the windshield.

What he is referring to here is the exhaust it ducted through a "radiator" to extract the heat. In the VW example, it was heat that came off the engine that was ducted into the cab. Corvairs also had a similar method. All of which proved to be less than desirable. I suggest that you get the proper hot water heater to do the job. If you want to do it on the "cheap" look around for an old truck heater in the junk (now known as salvage yards) yard. If it is a 6 volt unit, you can purchase a voltage drop from Cole Hersee....

Think I'd prefer a heater core with blower in the cab with a fan on the windsheild over the heat houser style.

As others have mentioned the salvage yards should provide. May even be able to find a unit that's adaptable to running a vent to the windshield.

You got that right. The heater in my cab is capable of keeping warm enough for me to not wear a jacket, even when it is -20C! /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif
