I have been strongly attracted to the DIY plans for a backhoe but favor the version that is its own trailer and is self propelled on the jobsite by using the "claw" to move itself around. Unfortunately I have way too many higher priority projects to get started on building one. My tractor has a cab and Kubota doesn't offer a backhoe compatible with it. Rather than hurt the tractor I could tow the hoe behind the tractor or tow it with a pickup.

I love my cab and A/C but... it sure interferes with a backhoe.

I sometimes leave my tractor in neutral, don't apply the parking brake and rely on just the hoe stabilizers to keep me in one place.
I do this so that I can pick up the stabilizers and move the whole rig with the bucket.
It works, but it isn't a lot of fun to go more then a few feet this way.
I certainly wouldn't want to RELY on just kedging with the bucket to get around a project, not even to get from my driveway to.... well, not anywhere, not even across the yard - & ESPECIALLY not across the front yard.

I understand your reasoning and fully agree in your situation but without a tractor attached the little Cad Digger is considerably lighter and would be much less destructive kedging around with two free wheeling wheels much more lightly loaded. Of course, I have no intent of doing a lot of fancy maneuvering on a nice lawn (I have no nice lawn.)
