sorry if this has been figured out elsewhere...

I've been doing a lot of burn pile work using the grapple lately. Everything is working fine with pedals, hydraulics, etc...but the "CAL" light seems to be coming on and going off about every 30 or 60 minutes or so while working. (I should mention, tractor is in 4WD for the area I'm doing this work.)

With the "CAL" light on, the tractor can't move. Normally not a problem, but a huge problem when you're piling brush onto an already burning pile. I haven't been getting too close to coals or flames (grapple hoses are expensive!) but at least once, I had to wait an eternity (ok it was about 3 to 4 seconds) to back out. :( Fortunately, no damage done.

First question is...how often should the cal light come on? Maybe something is wrong with it coming on every hour at least? ...I read that hitting both pedals by accident can trigger the CAL light...so trying to be not so clumsy with the feet. Didn't cure the problem though.

Secondly, if the "CAL" light coming on once in awhile is OK, is there a way to disable it when doing dangerous work like this?

thanks for any help!

Ron

Hey Ron. I also have an NX4510. The only time the CAL light comes on is when I hit both pedals at one time. Happens more in winter when I'm wearing winter boots. I do lots of burn piles, and if that happens when I try to back away, that can be very unnerving. Pretty sure that you can't turn this off. Just be very careful in situations like that.

Maybe you should calibrate the pedals. I do that every few months.

thanks Dave, I will re-check to see if it's clumsy feet that solves the problem and like you say, be super careful with the pedals when at the burn pile. I didn't know a guy should be cal'ing the pedals...I found the procedure in another thread and will give it a shot if the problem persists.

The cal light only comes on when

1) tires are slipping such as pushing a pile of brush into the fire, but you’re on snow. My cal light came on doing exactly this when I’m axle slipped more than the other because of differences in traction when I first started burning slash. I’ll post the video. I didn’t call it out, but it happened on my second push, the first push I did without a rear attachment.

2) when stomping on both pedals at the same time.

Here is the video.

Thanks for sharing this MinnesotaEric! Your comments are making me think back to the day this was happening quite a bit, and there were different traction conditions going on for sure, with some drier ground next to muddy ground that was softening up.

This puzzle's coming together. :scratchchin:Thanks again for the input...gotta love this forum!

Another common cause is the location of the front loader hydraulic hoses under the right step. If the hoses are close enough to either pedal under the step, they can flex under pressure and cause a slight movement of one of the HST Pedals if they are run to close to the pedal linkage. This happens often doing front loader work. Make sure the hoses are tied up out of the travel path of the HST pedals under the right floor board.

Hope this helps

thanks, that looks very solid.

I had a look and yup, the hoses will have to be tied back under the right floorboard. Will figure something out and see how it goes.

Thanks for helping me understand this issue.
