Anyone have any firm opinions on proper Calcium chloride (flakes) application methods. I'm treating common driveways that are mostly what we refer to around here as "graded base"-which is 3/4" crushed stone (trap rock or "bluestone") combined with stone dust (the fines from the same crushing operation). I use a LandPride power rake.

Is it better to spread the flakes and then power rake/grade or apply the flakes as a top application when all the grading/shaping is done?

(1) grade and shape,
(2) pack,
(3) wet down LIGHTLY,
(4) spread the chloride,
(5) wet down again.
Do it on a sunny hot day....
Make step 5 just before noon and the sun will do the rest for you in the afternoon.

I spray liquid Calcium Chloride in the spring on the back roads and that is the way we do it. Whether it be flake or liquid, both work the same and basically the same procedure for each.
The grader grades the road, the traffic packs it, the water truck sprinkles on it and I come along and
squirt it with the chloride. The water truck comes after me and wets it down. You can put it down in the rain as long as it isn't a torrential down pour.
