My brother in-law was telling me that he thought my tractor would run on #2 heating fuel or diesel. Is this true?
If it will then what I will do it make a filling station off from my 33o gallon oil tank.

Just judging from Dodge Ram forums... It looks like it depends on the injector pumps lubrication source.

Using Other Fuels in a Ram Diesel

For the "inline" P7100 pump internally lubricated by engine oil ('94 to 98.5)These fuels are "OK":
#1 & #2 Diesel, 1K & 2K Kerosene, Jet-A, Jet A-1, JP-5, and JP-8.
NOT OK under any circumstances: Jet-B, JP-4, and Cite

The "rotary" VE and VP-44 pumps are fuel lubricated. (98.5+ 24 valve)
#1-D Diesel or #2 Fuel Oil (diesel) only

Alternate fuels listed for the P7100 pump may be used in the VE pump if if 5% lube oil is added.

Hi.. I am a petroleum chemist with approx. 21 years of petroleum specification background. For what it is worth there is a major difference between diesel fuel and home heating oil. Diesel fuel for engines contains an additive and often a cetane improver. Cetane is similar to octane in gasoline. Every diesel engine has a minimum cetane value that it needs to run properly. Usually a 40 cetane is acceptable, but some engines require a 45 . I would be concerned about burning diesel fuel in my home furnace because of the effects on the air fuel ratio that the diesel fuel aditives would have. Most engines however will not immediately suffer from a low cetane. Over time you will begin to notice a sluggish performance from the engine with an overall loss of power

So it sounds like he is saying the problem may be not enough cetane (whatever that is) but in the begining he says diesel fuel OFTEN contains cetane. So in other words deisel doesn't even always contain cetane.
I wouldn't think a 2615 would need high octane diesel. I was checking it out,..it is pretty old fashioned engineering with a little electric solnoid type fuel pump.

My Fuel Supplier told me that Heating and diesel are the exact same thing.

So you can use it in the furnace or the tractor either one and they hain't gonna notice any difference .

If it will then what I will do is make a filling station off from my 330 gallon oil tank.
Get a 100 dollar elect diesel pump a $30water Blocker filter and a $20 nozzle from Northern tool.
To fill your tractor take the filler cap off the 330 gallon tank drop the suction hose down into the tank turn on the pump and fill the tractor.
After the tractor is filled remove the suction hose from the tank and replace the cap.

My Dad is a pack rat. I think he already has a fuel pump , a hose, & a gas nozzle just like at the gas station.
I install heating equipment for a living so a hokey set up won't cut it.
I think I'll drop a 1" or 1-1/4" pick up pipe down in the top of the tank & hard pipe it to the filter then the pump. I have a one bay garage right on the other side of the wall from the tank so I'll make a hanger for the fuel nozzle right there with a switch to turn the pump on.
It should be sweet.:D

I just really want to make sure the heating fuel won't hurt my tractor though.

When we fire heating systems for the first time , we Pick up 10 gallons of
diesel to fire the boilers.....

They are set up with test equipment and I have never
seen a change in the CO2 or smoke after the tank is filled with #2......

I don't run #2 because of the red dye , A big No , No , if you run on the road ....

It gets cold in NH and the #2 could gel if it is not cut with #1
at $4.25 a gallon , I will stick with diesel at $4.00.. SOB , SOB .....

#2 could have a higher sulfur content....

This from a driver for a local oil distributor (fuel and heating) who just filled our tank at my fire station where I work:

#2 diesel has more octane (cetane) because of the parafin that it contains. Can and should be used when temps are above freezing.

#1 diesel doesn't contain the parafin and can and should be used when temps are below freezing and there is possibility of fuel gelling. #1 doesn't have quite the octane rating.

Bio-diesel, due to it's composition of 20% bio-mass, has a tendancy to gell at cold temps, consequently it is mixed with #1 to lower the gell point. This fuel also may provide for more power.

The jobber who was here doesn't think much of either bio-diesel or ethanol, and in fact thinks bio-D is a big scam. As for the ethanol, he says the alcohol in it will loosen any dirt or shellac in your fuel tank and lines, thus making for some very dirty fuel. Ethanol will also eat rubber gaskets and lines over time.

Taking delivery of my 2615 TLB tomorrow. I can barely contain my excitement. Twenty one hours and counting down.

I'm one happy camper!
