Can anyone explain Massey Ferguson MS No and Serial No

I have been trying to research my MF for awhile to figure out the year and haven't had much luck. I was thinking there should be some system to MF serials like other manufacturers have, but can't find any solid info on decoding. Then there is the illusive "MS No", can't find any reference to it online. Does anyone know what it is?

I just want to join in this question. I could look up my Kubota serial number and figure out the year, but don't seem to be able to for my new MF GC1715. I can't figure out how to look up the serial number.

Historically ag equipment serial numbers don't consider the model year. The year it was sold was considered the model year not the year it was built. That's why model number and serial number is important down the road if parts are needed.

I suppose that makes sense, since what really matters is hours and model, not year bought. But a year of sitting in the rain or sun is not nothing to plastic and rubber. So for me, year is worth knowing.
