I'm considering using a rivet nut to fasten brackets and a DC outlet to my tractor sheet metal. Does anyone have a good rivet nut tool to recommend? Thank you, Gary

Gary, did you consider something like this: a marine grade 12V outlet. I think it was around $6, and a hole saw is all you need to install it. I got some inline fuse holders, less than a buck, from Hong Kong via eBay. A waterproof, rustproof installation.

I do have a marine grade outlet that has a waterproof housing that requires 2 screws through metal to hold it in place. Initially I thought about direct sheet metal screws with some sort of rust inhibitor to fasten it next to my seat on the fender wall, however, I'm thinking I can get a more secure fastening and lower risk of rust by using rivet nuts on treated metal where the holes are. This is a pic for the one I have....... surface-boxes.jpg Photo by sidewinderdotcomdotau | Photobucket ........Gary

Not sure if you could use a pop rivet there or not. I know you said a rivet nut, but don't know what that is.

Riv nut is a BF Goodrich aviation tool. I have a complete set but B4 getting them I simply used an appropriate machine screw and proper nut.
We'd thread the screw into the riv-nut and tighten the nut down to pull the rivet up and compress it in place.
You should be able to purchase from any aviation supply house. Sporty is one and they do have a small unit for occasional usage.

There are some inserts that can be put into sheet metal and has threads on the inside when put in.
That does take a tool to put them in, I think they might be klen-sheet or something like that.

X 2. I have the installation tool and several inserts of different sizes but for a one off job just do as Piloon suggests....it will work just as well. If you believe you will have a use for several inserts in the future (or if you are like me and like having lots of tools ) get the tool.
