Oil & Fuel Can for diesel fuel

For my old lawn mower I used an old Jerry can - Jerrycan - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia - and it never leaked. I had it back in the car just laying flat, I could store it upside down and not even a drop came out.

Now for my Kubota I got a new plastic can for diesel fuel - and it leaks like crazy; had it in my jeep full and it fell down while braking and spilled diesel from closed spout.

I dont think there is a better designed can than the original jerry can - I am gonna get one more for diesel fuel and the plastic is gonna go, life is too short to babysit a fuel can.

OK, I feel better now - anybody ever made similar experience?

I know what you mean. I hate those plastic cans. The nozzles never thread on right, the vents get clogged, the plastic fades... etc.

I use the plastic fuel cans for diesel. To haul them I use grey plastic "bussing pans", about 18 x 24 inches and 4 or 6 inches deep. I got mine from Sams Club. Two cans will fit in and wedge slightly. I carry the cans in the back of my Suburban and never have had a spill or other problem. I started using the pan to catch spills from filling. Works great.

Personally, I prefer the plastic 5 gallon units that are shaped similar to a Jerry Can. The big thing I like is the side handle, which is very useful when filling the tank on my tractor. The filler is at about armpit height when I'm on the ground and the extra handle is, well, handy.

I carry the can in trunk of my Passat, sitting on a old dog kennel tray and bungeed to the luggage tie downs. No problems in several years of driving, sometimes with a little more than average enthusiasm.

I got a plastic 5 gallon diesel container from Tractor supply CO and the filler neck/cap mechanism is fantastic. Easy filling with no spilling and sealed so tight I can't even smell diesel when the container is in the car with me.

I use the same Blitz spill proof plastic can rpoage linked to and I hate it. In spite of being spill proof, I spill everytime. The self closing valve that slides on the spout always binds. As I lift and tip it back, the fancy nozzel allows take-up air to go in and the fuel keeps coming out until I can prop it on something and get my hand free to pull it closed.

Strikes me as a very poor design.

I have two of the Military Fuel Cans made by Sceptor in Canada. These are plastic versions of the old Jerry Cans. I messed up and got the gas spout, 3/4 inch. Get the Diesel spout, it will empty the can pretty quick. JC

It has become almost impossible to find anything other than Blitz around here. I have a bunch of their self venting cans in various colors, all purchased because I couldn't find anything else. They are junk in my opinion. Venting back through the spout is slow, prone to choking off, and just a lousy design.

Their diesel and kerosene cans have the same narrow spout that the gas cans have, even though a standard diesel filler is much larger than the EPA mandated small unleaded neck. They are a complete PITA to use.
