John Deere 855 manual has a service procedure to drain fluid, change spin on filter, then replace with new fluid. If I just want to change the filter without draining fluid, can I, or will the fluid run out from the filter housing?

I can do that on my Kubota B2650 without losing much fluid but be quick with the new filter oiled and prepped. Just google videos for transmission filter on tractor. And you’ll get a ton of hits. I did this way on initial service, all services thereafter coincide with both fluid and filter changes.

Put a shop vac on the fill, it'll create a vacuum and the fluid won't leak. Don't do what a friend of mine did tho, he put it on the wrong part of the cleaner. You can imagine how that went.............Mike

if you lift the front to where the filter is higher than the highest part of the trans minimises the amount that will flow out. Another tractor with FEL works great.

I have been warned not to fill the filter before installing because the oil you add will enter the system without passing through the filter media.

I change mine quickly and lose about one quart of fluid plus the volume in the filter itself.

The shop vac on the fill port works great. May need some tape to get a half decent seal & hold it on, but it doesnt need to be that great of a seal. There is practically no leakage when you remove the filter.

This is true if you fill thru the center which is the easiest way unfortunately , fill it from the outer holes and you're good..............Mike

So? When you add to the fill port on the top, it goes in unfiltered at first.

And I don't get the whole vacuum thing. Doesn't that suck it up into the vacuum and/or hose, making a worse mess?

One doesn't insert vacuum hose nozzle ""into the oil"" only into the hyd oil reservoir opening therefor only a vacuum is created in reservoir when shop vac is operating not allowing oil to drain out.

I fail to see the need to filter "new oil" before it enters hyd system so I fill all filters when changing that attach upright.
