I picked up a JD 950 CUT which is rated at around 27 HP at the PTO. A friend has a near new 6' bushhog from TSC (Rhino brand?) that he is selling for dirt cheap. Do yall think this tractor can run a 6' hog without undue strain? I'll be cutting grass & weeds on slightly rolling hills, no rocks.

If the stuff your cuttin isn't too thick and heavy... can probably get by with a 6' hog.

Or if you're willing to go a bit slow - 2-3mph.

Rule of thumb is 5 PTO hp per foot, so you'd need 30hp by that rule. Meaning you're only slightly underpowered. I would give it a try. Any chance he'll let you try it out before you buy?

Per the Rhino operators manual the 72" mower require a min of 40 hp and the 60" mower require 30 hp . These numbers are for the TW-72 and TW-60 mowers.

With that said I would also be worried that the TW72 weighs in at 1050lbs so you might have a prob keeping the front wheels on the ground.

I do understand that Rhino makes lighter weight machines but I had these specs on hand .

good luck

Unless it's a one-in-a-million TSC store, that won't be a Rhino mower. MOst likely a King Kutter brand. Light to medium duty. If the 950 will handle the weight, (and I THINK it will), you don't have to make a full width cut. Use 4' or 5' and let the rest lap over already mowed ground. That will reduce the hp needed in heavy grass to an extent. If it's "dirt cheap" (bought a load of dirt lately?) you can try it, then re-sell if it's not what you want. Maybe even make a few bucks! You MAY need a few front weights, or possibly fill the front tires with fluid for ballast if the mower proves to make the front end light.

Ideally, you probably want a 5'er. I use 6' mowers on 40 and 47 hp tractors. In SOME conditions, the 6' mower gives them all they want.

Here's a photo to clear up which one we are talking about.

I should add that the housing is what measures 6 feet across. Could that mean that the blade length is actually 5 feet? I would think you have to have some clearance from the blades to the housing. I'll see if he can get a model number to verify the size.

I don't think you'll have any problems at all. Just watch when you're lifting the cutter. You will want front ballast or a loader. If you don't have either, just tow the cutter (disconnect the top link, lift the lower links enough so the cutter sides don't dig in and tow away! I do this all the time with my 5' cutter.)

Good luck, and enjoy your 950 (very robust tractor!)
