Gov. Northam in Va. has indicated his intention of extending anti-gun laws as far as he can go. Last session of the Virginia legislature was about as bad as it could be for law abiding gun owners but the General Assembly did not pass the proposed legislation that would have banned, and in some cases confiscated, commonly-owned semi-automatic firearms and their magazines and accessories that Northam demanded.
Enter Secretary of Public Safety Brian Moran and Lori Haas of the Coalition to Stop Gun Violence (CSGV) as allies to Gov. Northam in their quest to reduce Second Amendment rights. Virginia residents may remember Haas as a vocal cheerleader for Attorney General Mark Herring's 2015 attempt to remove reciprocity for 25 states Right-to-Carry permits.
Moran has claimed that commonly-owned semi-automatic firearms are not protected under the Second Amendment to the U.S. Constitution. However, the SCOTUS has made it clear that governments cannot ban firearms 妬n common use for lawful purposes.
So what are the thoughts about what is coming up next in Virginia with Second Amendment rights and, more importantly, will Virginia citizens stand for severe restrictions?
This is important for the nation as right now Virginia seems to be ground ZERO for the Second Amendment. It's OK to tolerate the opinions of those with whom you disagree but be respectful. This is grounds for an important discussion.
