Well I finally got my new to me since nov. JD 14t baler actually works. I started from scratch with no baler no tractor now I have both. I have had a few set backs ( Timing issues, broken knotter assembly). but I feel like iam getting somewhere now. I just put a few bales of straw threw it and it actually spit out a couple. They where not perfect but they where bales.

I say not perfect because I think I need to adjust the bale pressure abit it could also be the straw I as using is chopped pretty fine alot fell threw the pickup tines. So I think I will have to mess with adjust ments a bit Im sure when time comes. So I think I will clean it up a bit a continue to prep to paint.:D

Good job !

You should wait until you run 5 - 10 bales thru it before screwing down the tension cranks. First check the number of threads showing to maintain approximately equal tension side to side. Add a few cranks at a time untill you get the bale weight you want to work with. The bale length will need to be checked, too. This is a small change in the measuring wheel gear stop.

You will eventually find out that the compaction is a function of first or second cutting, how much hay is in each charge, even the type of hay in the field and moisture content. You don't ever want the tension so tight that the needle lift link shear pin breaks when trying to pull the needles out. If it does, the needles will stay in, the plunger hits them and you get a few broken parts. It ruins your day, for sure. Now is also the time to start looking for customers for your hay. Unless you need it all, lining up in-field delivery saves the awful job of picking up the bales.

You didn't mention a rake, but that ought to be on your inventory of necessary hay tools....

ZZ, I think your right and dont plan on messing with any adjustment until actual baling. I am still looking for a mower conditioner or sickle and crimper conditioner and a rake. I have been too many auctions but not yet come across any good deals working on a couple though. Hopefully I will get a few pics up when painted.

Congrats on your 14T baler. I'm looking for one of those or equivalent now. Plan to put in hay on 7 of my 10 acres.

Been acquiring haying equipment the past 6 months. So far I have a nice Allis Chalmers trailer type sicklebar mower

Still need a grain drill (10-ft, with grass seed box), a drop spreader and the baler.
May need a subsoiler.
Don't see many tedders around here since the climate is fairly dry.

Have never used a trailing PTO mower but looking at the at the photo I'd say that the one you have would be a really good acquisition.Your JD rake looks
OK too.
