Can you help me with my Murray?

Hi there,

I tried to then back it up out of the garage by disengaging the lever under the seat ( so the rear wheels spin freely ) and it wouldn't budge.

I jacked it back up and the wheels are rolling in opposite directions when I spin one of them. Now, I read somewhere - forgive my ignorance - that this is expected normally but when the disconnect lever is switched to "push" mode, they should spin freely.

It won't. Now, it appears that the lever is moving but it doesn't have any effect on my ability to move the mower manually.

Any ideas?

Is this correct?
You can now push the machine with the hydrostat lever in the "disengaged" position, but with the hydrostat "engaged" the machine doesn't move.

The Murray's have a mechanical brake, with the brake rotor and pad assembly located just in front of the rear axle on the right side of the mower (right side as you're in the seat facing forward). If the brake sticks, which is common, the tractor doesn't move, period; you can't drive it or push it. If this happens, a shot of silicone or WD-40 and a hard move of the control rod should free it up.

If the hydrostat lever is in the "engaged" position, can you push the machine?

When you step on the forward/reverse pedals with the motor running what happens?
