Can you move a CUT in a rental truck?

The ones I have rented do not have anything suitable to tie down your tractor with. As a heads up, if you tell them that is what you are using it for, they will not rent it to you - at least that was the case with every company we tried including some commercial rental places.

I have paid less than what you are talking about to have stuff delivered by a local garage where they used their flat bed car huler - something to consider. It was much cheaper than renting and it was much further than 350 miles.

Question, can you move a CUT, about 26hp inside of a rental 22' truck? I might have to move a tractor, and it would be convienent to use a straight job truck, i.e Penske rental or similar. Wondering if anyone has ever done this, and is it safe and legal to do. Overall trip would be about 350 miles. Not interested taking chances, so your feedback is appreciated.

Go for it...you'll be fine.

I once moved a 6500# show car 3K miles in the back of a 24' Ryder. Mind you this truck was rated for it as well, 26K GVW IIRC. What I did was contact the corporate office and ask about it. I explained what I was doing and the reply was -in so many words- "while we don't normally approve of this, if your willing to accept the responsibility of any damage or accident...have a safe trip"

I loaded the car by using a roll-back car hauler and backed it up to the Ryder. Using a couple planks, I rolled the car across and into the box. To secure it I removed a number of the screws that attached the wood flooring, fed some steel cable through the holes around the trucks frame, and used clamps and turnbuckles to tie it down. I did this at all 4 corners of the car.

Then I used 4x4 lumber to 'box' it in around all 4 tires by using lag bolts to tie the lumber together, and then used L brackets screwed to the trucks floor. Maybe a little overkill, but the car I hauled was worth as much as the Ryder truck if not more.

When I was finished, I reinstalled the previously removed screws in the floor deck and used wood putty to fill the holes from the L bracket screws.

6 months later, I did it again and moved back east since my DW didn't like living out west. So yes you can do it safely if you accept responsibility and secure the tractor properly.

Have a safe trip

One more thing. I know my home owners insurance doesn't cover my tractor while in transit. I carry an additional policy on the tractor for this reason. Their logic is that your home owners policy doesn't have a collison provision. It will cover for theft, fire, and the like but not if you damage it in transit or use. My adder policy cost me $300/year for $15000 tractor value and covers even damage if I were to roll it over.

You could get a policy and cancel it when you arrive safely.
