I have to rebuild the steel pads that my trench chain rides on. (pics below)
I would also like to experiment with building up the teeth although thats not really worth all the grinding involved.

The chain rides on the bar that will be built up, would too hard of a weld material wear on the bottom portion of chain that contacts the bar too quickly?

What rods do you use? Brands and specific numbers please.

The welder is a big 40, that should burn most anything

Thank you:)

G'day i have had good success with using stainless rods on wear pads and the likes i use CIG weldalls but don't know if they are available over there, great rod :D, expensive :(, they seem to last longer than hard faceing rods, good luck with it:)

I ended up going to P.A. to return a torch and they had a lincoln rod.
I tried using it this afternoon, from what I can tell it will work better then the 6013. but its not very hard.

Its 5/32 WearShield BU (Build Up)
the description says moderate hardness to resist shock and metal to metal wear.

I think I will look for the stainless stuff and lay that on top of this BU rod.

But then maybe I should just try it as is. I havent had the machine long enough to know how long it should last.

That 'Wear Shield' sounds like the right stuff. After all you don't want to grind away your chain to save a wear pad.

As for building up the teeth, there I would use something hard as they are grinding against dirt/rocks all the time. How much are new teeth? If you want to rebuild them maybe it's a good winter project as it looks like it would take a while.

Hi Charlz, I think thats true, and I will at least try this out.
As far as the teeth that wouldnt be a priority, I have 6 spares, they are only 15$ a piece one at a time,. Not sure if would get much of a volume discount but theres about 65+- teeth. @ $15 thats over 900$::(
