....a kid who has never played baseball before has found himself on the chamipionship little league team for Hardee County?
I watched this kid run across the field the wrong direction in Little Seminoles Football, and make an amazing touchdown for the other team. It took fifteen minutes to explain to him why the other kids parents were cheering and laughing. Poor kid. Football did not work out.
He's always had a propensity for golf. Has had two hole in ones and was in the paper both times. Would go play golf when he had eight dollars to play the senior nine holes (?) in the hottest part of the day, when no one else in their right mind would go out there. If he could get the club manager to strike him a deal he would do without food and drink the whole day just to play.
As a result of this love for golf, it took his little league coach three weeks to teach him not to hold the bat like a golf club. He would literally stand there with the end of the bat touching home base waiting for the pitch.
The coach took to saying 'four!' and shaking his head, until Jake finally learned to hold the bat over his shoulder.
Now he goes today to Lakeland for the tournament, his team didn't lose the first game, and this is an awful thing to say but I almost hope they lose because if they go to state I don't know how we'll be able to get him back and forth with one gas guzzling vehicle and one broke down.
My heart wants him to go all the way, but my wallet says this is trouble in the making. I guess if worse comes to worse maybe I can approach the coach and see if Jake can ride back and forth with him, but dang I would like to be there.
It may have been a little slow coming but I think he has found an organized sport that he can play and he is thrilled with his trophy and the possibility of going far, but I am scared of what it might take to get him there. Oh well. Guess I'll just have to wait and see. I guess it would be better to let him go with the coach if I can arrange it than risk keeping from a potentially golden opportunity. I think.
