My brother-in-law recently bought a new Duramax from a dealer in another state. He wanted one because his friend bought one and really liked it. His friend had a new Ford F150 that he bought out of Canada in Oregon (not sure if it was from a private party or a dealer). He drove the Ford for nearly a year with no trouble. He decided he wanted a heavier truck with a diesel. He traded the Ford in for the Duramax to a local dealer who had NO manufacturer affiliation. The Duramax had a few hundred miles on it. The guy saved several thousand dollars on each truck, over the cost for a new one from a manufacturer affiliated dealer. He had the Duramax for about 9 months and it needed some “warranty” work. He took it to the local Chev dealer and learned that most things are not covered. The truck was brought in from Canada and there is no, or limited, warranty on it.

This dealer always has “new” Fords, Dodges and Chevs on the lot with a few hundred miles on them. Looks like most are bought in Canada and sold in the US, so there may be no warranty on the truck.

Anyone had similar experiences?

Just thought you should know in case you get a similar deal.

I know Nikon USA does not like to warranty non-US destination lenses. Some catalogs and web pages offer non-US warranty lenses cheaper. Seems to be a common thing...

That may be true with Chevy but it's not true with Fords. The warranty is just like the US warranty. I bought a truck a couple years ago from Canada and my warranty was 100% transferrable. I had some work done a couple times and it was covered 100% no questions asked. I got such a good deal I had a couple people I know do the same thing and they had no problem at all with warranty.

And it's not necessarily true of GM either. Remember that we have this "auto pact" that allows cars/trucks to be built in either country and sold in the other. All of the Big 3 do it, all the time.
The kicker is whether the vehicle is "grey market" or not. It didn't used to matter ... but lately the dealers have been whining because the grey market vehicles are coming into the US (or BACK into the US) at a great price ... becuase of taxes, currency exchange, etc.
Grey market vs. normal? Grey market means imported by the dealer ... while normal means imported by the manufacturer. No difference in the vehicles ... just trying to protect the dealers.
If you BUY the vehicle in Canada and legally bring it over, the warrenty is in FULL effect (people do move ...)
Legally, the dealer selling the grey market vehicle is required to tell the buyer there is no warranty protection in the US (while there is if you drive across the border).

That explains it then Wingnut. I actually bought mine in Canada from a private individual and brought it back home. It had around 20k on it and I never had a problem with any kind of warranty work. The guy I sold it to hasn't had any problems either. Didn't know there was a difference. Thanks for clearing it up.

For some reason, here in Michigan, there's quite a few dealers who bring in Canadian cars .... so that stuff was all over the papers last year. One of the locals is advertising 99 Grand Ams ... he apparently has about 60 ... and even though he has 3 or 4 "legit" dealerships ... he advertises these as HE offers a "lifetime" warranty. No mention of a mfg warranty.
I think it's another "you get what you pay for" deal ... there has to be some reason why they're significantly cheaper ... and the lack of a warranty certainly helps explain it.
Glad I could provide some insight.
