I can't say that my metal canopy radiates heat towards me. Of course in the summer it is hard to tell since the sun is so hot and the tractor generates a lot of heat to boot. My canopy sits up pretty high and I don't think the metal makes it any hotter than it already is. Mine is high enough up that any heat generated is more than offset by the shade it creates from the miserable summer sun.

As far as noise goes, the canopy does reflect back some of the engine noise but the insulating layer beneath the canopy helps to absorb and muffle some of the noise.

I think operating conditions should be a big consideration when deciding whether to go with fiberglas or metal. If you have a lot of trees and expect to spend a lot of time ducking and dodging tree limbs I would certainly consider the merits of metal vs. fiberglas. Most of the fiberglas canopies I have seem look dressier than the metal ones, so if aesthetics are more of a concern a fiberglas canopy would probably be the way to go. Either choice is a lot better than cooking in the sun and getting drenched by sudden showers.

I called around this week, and will probably go with a Firebird unit.

Now after seeing your backhoe, I want one! Do you have any head clearance issues while sitting in the seat of the backhoe?

I should have a canopy in the next few weeks, and am wondering why I waited so long to decide I needed one.

Thanks folks!

My 2 cents worth,
I'm going the cheap route and I'll make mine out of plywood. Before you think this in dumb, remember that boats are made out of plywood. All you have to do is cover it some fiberglass cloth and epoxy resin. Wood is very easy to work with, cost way less, is easily repaired, good insulator, easy to adjust, and if it every gets really hammered, you can just build another one. Easy to hand little items off of. Thats it. Totally waterproof if you use epoxy on it. Paint it white on top to reflect heat. bw

I was going to build a plywood one for the same reasons ! but when I called TelTrax they said they didn"t have a dealer near me so they'd sell me a "second" for $185. Too cheap to resist - and I can't find any reason it was a "second".

The Bradco Hoe is mostly oak. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Yep, I also made a plywood backhoe, but I'm most proud of my wooden brush cutter!! You cant even tell when you hit a stump. Just makes more mulch!

Hmm, excellent idea. Since my tractor looks like it has dents in every panel, it would not be a bad idea to try and fabricate one. I have a piece of 5/8" ply that would be about the right size. I should probably go with 3/8" though to keep it lighter. I'll fiddle around with ideas this weekend. It would be cool to build one for 10% of what I was planning to spend! I can spend that on a top cylinder. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Definaltely worth looking into!

Thanks Brett

Yep, and if you dont want to fool with the epoxy, you can just keep it well painted. Make it as big as you want for extra shade, 4x4, 4x6 or what ever. bw

PS, I have a plywood ramp going to my shed. I just put roofing tar on the ends of it to seal out the water. It lasted apx. 15 yrs and didn't rot from the ends. It died in the middle where I had some nails in it.

I love the use-what-you-have spirit!

I saw an older tractor one time mowing, stopped and talked
to the fellow as I loved his canopy.

It was a 4 post set up, the top was a hood off of a 55 Pontiac.

Thought it looked familiar!

Search for 'CHEAP shade canopy' in the build-it-youself forum, there are always alternatives /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gifChet
(I would post a link, but don't know how)
