On my SALSCO,THE BOOK SAYS THEY RECCOMEND1/8 TO 3/16 FROM KNIFES TO KNIFE BED .It also says The larger the opening the faster the machine will feed, and the harder the machine will work.1/4 inch sounds a little much, even at our sawmill i work at i dont recall seeing 1/4 thick wood chips.

If the cutter feeds from upper right to lower left could the knifes not be covering the inside corner? You would be pushing against the flywheel?

TreeMonkey,
to answer your question, my feed rate is fixed. If I'm chipping a long hard piece of wood, I'll pull back on the feed bar a couple times to prevent the engine from lugging. I only have ~21pto HP so it seems prudent....Mostly the big stuff goesw for firewood, but I have way too many poplars in the woods yet. To pull back on that feed bar, I have to really give it some effort. I will get around to adding a foot bar accessory as other have done, but its not priority #1

Moeh1 That would be a pain to have to watch the chipper closely like that. They are labor saving devices overall. I like mine for the fact that I can stuff things in there and walk away to grab more. I wonder if there is a clever way to regulate that feed rate on your machine. The foot bar sounds like a quick and easy way for now. Anything that saves having to haul piles of branches to a dump site is a good thing in my book. 3-4 truck loads of branches chip down to about 1 truck load which saves me a lot at a Customers job site.

TreeMonkey,It only when I get to 5-1/2 stuff that I watch it. Most of that goes in the woodstove, only the poplar get chipped up. I knew I was close to the limit on HP, really bought it for the 2" and less limb stuff and I agree it is nice to insert and walk away.
If I got the real need, the next door neighbor has several bigger tractors that will eat anything I could fit into it. For the money, the Jinma/FarmPro/etc. is a worthwhile machine.
My main point was that my springs has some real pull to them, I don't think I could essentially just lift and slide them off as is reported here on the problem machine. I hope he is closing in on a solution.

Moeh1 I am like you once the wood gets to be above 4" I usually lop it into firewood for the customer or myself. If it has been a long day of tree work I start feeding everything up to 6" into the chipper just to get the job done. It would be interesting to see about that other chippers springs and if they are pulling tight enough. Or if the feed roller is in need of sharper teeth to pull in the wood.

A friend of mine bought a chipper that appears to be a Jinma/Clone and never took the time to set it up properly

Any ideas?

Since we don't have any pictures of your chipper to help ID which chipper you have or to possibly help you see the problem ?? Here is another guess..........

I think it was early 2007 when some of the first Jinma chipper clones / copies first came into the USA.

I remember seeing some pictures where the factory did not machine the bolt holes correctly in the flywheel for the blades and the bolts that attached the flywheel to the power shaft. This made/caused them to not use/install the correct bolts/nuts.
