My tractor is only a couple of years old and i was using an old borrowed auger. It was a little tough to get the PTO shaft all the way on so that the pin clicked home. I didn't need tools to get it to go, but is did take some persuading. Now, I'm done with the auger and I absolutely cannot get the shaft off. I've had to disassemble the shaft so that there is just the one piece hanging from the back of my tractor so I could get it down to the garage. I've shot a bunch of PB Blaster up there and I greased it up before I put it on. It wasn't terribly rusted prior to putting it on.

So, does anyone have any ideas? I'm hesitant to put a torch to it because I don't want to take a chance on ruining any seals on the tractor. Any help is certainly appreciated.

Thanks in advance,
Kyle

What you did was the PTO shaft was too long at some point in the travel of the PHD, either full up ot down and you jammed the coupling on the PTO stub. If you have the cross out, slip a bar through the holes in the cross and use a hammer to drive it off (make sure the lock pin is depressed).

Try to determine exactly what's stuck. If the part that's still on the tractor feels jammed tight with no moving at all then it's probably like 5030 has stated. Lot of the yokes on those pto shafts are open inside and you can see the end of your pto stub after you remove the cross (universal joint). If after hammering don't work you can use a large puller while tapping with a hammer but it'll take a large puller such as this one to help.

If the yoke is loose and the pin is not releasing you may have to cut it off. If it's the pin stuck you might can keep tapping on it with a hammer to help it release. If you don't think the release pin is the problem don't beat on it or you may have 2 problems. If it comes down to cutting it off and I've seen it don't use a torch use a cut off wheel on an angle grinder. If it's the pin stuck and you simply can't get it to release sometimes you can cut the section that's holding the pin with less chance of damaging the stub.

If it is just stuck as 5030 says you shouldn't have to worry about cutting just figure a way to put a pair of vise grips to hold the pin in the release position while working it off. Good Luck.

Does it have a collar that moves to release the shaft? If so try moving the collar in the opposite direction than you have been while pulling on the shaft.

You mention that the pto coupling had a pin.
I have experienced that sometimes pushing the pin in too far will move the groove in the pin moves partially past the round slot on the pto shaft thus locking it again.
Here is a typical pin image

I can imagine using a C clamp and two sockets to help position the pin and give you a chance to experiment with how far in the pin should be pushed to effect a release.
One socket would go over the end of the pin that you dont push on in order to give the c clamp something to pull against.
The other socket or piece of tubing would go over the end of the pin you are pushing on to cause a release. This socket would be a spacer so that the Clamp could only depress the pin part way.
As a last resort,I would cut the off the pin with a mini grinder and drill it out thus ensuring it is not hindering the coupling coming off.
I would be cautious about applying too much force or violence to the pto shaft for fear of breaking something much more expensive than a pto coupling
Cutting the coupling off carefully with a mini grinder is last option.

I'd remove the auger and attach a come-along which was attached to something solid on one end and to auger pto shaft on opposite end, depress pin and crank on come-along while tapping on yoke with a hammer

Yep, worked for me, then replaced with a new pin.

This is exactly what I did. Seemed like the lowest hanging fruit. I depressed the pin and used 100mph tape to keep it held in and used a come-along and it popped right off. I didn't even have to beat on it with the fine adjustment tool.

Thanks everyone for your replies.
