Can\'t get rear PTO hooked up

I'm a tractor novice, so this is probably a silly question.

I have a Woods tiller which I bought with my tractor, so the dealer installed it. I took it off to use my box scraper, and now for the life of me I can't get the PTO hooked back up. The bearings seem free and there are no burrs on the splines. It seems to go partway on & stop. It's almost like I don't have the collar back far enough or something. (You do pull the collar back, right?) /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Re: Can\'t get rear PTO hooked up

If there is a collar on the shaft end that you hook up to the PTO, try turning it. This moves a retaining bolt on the inside and allow the shaft to get hooked up to the PTO.

Some may have a bolt that you have to push in to allow it to go on the PTO.

This retaining bolt is what keeps the shaft on the PTO once it is hooked up.

Either way it can sometimes be a frustrating experience.

Re: Can\'t get rear PTO hooked up

I had one once that you had to push the button in very hard to get it to go all the way on. I am not familiar with the collar that you are describing but it may be that you just have to pull really hard. You know it fits so it must be something simple.

Re: Can\'t get rear PTO hooked up

"Most" of the collar type PTO shafts I have seen have to be turned to release, not "puled back".

Look inside the PTO splines and you will see that there is a "catch" or tooth between 2 of the splines. Try turning the collar until you see the "tooth" retract then you will know what to do.

The other thing is to be sure you are putting it straight onto the PTO shaft. It has to be perfectly aligned or it won't go on.

Re: Can\'t get rear PTO hooked up

Some have a collar on each side of the spring. I've tried sliding the wrong collar several times, usually when it's about 90 degrees out. On mine you have to slide the metal collar away from the tractor. When this comes up, it's usually a tiller.

Re: Can\'t get rear PTO hooked up

On my Woods rotary cutter you have to pull the collar back while pushing forward onto the PTO shaft. If you have it on correctly you will hear a definite "click" as it slides forward onto the shaft. To double check, pull backwards to make sure it won't pull off.

Re: Can\'t get rear PTO hooked up

I have one PTO shaft with a collar and one with a spring-loaded pin you have to push in. In both cases, a certain amount of turning while pushing the PTO shaft is required. I think in both cases there's a spring-loaded pin involved, but I find the collar much easier to deal with, since keeping my thumb on that pin while turning the PTO shaft takes a lot of effort (for me) and leaves a dent in my thumb for the next day or so.

If you're doing this by yourself, I recommend rigging up something to keep the PTO shaft at the right height so you don't have to deal with holding up that weight while simultaneously pushing and turning. For my post hole auger I use a block and tackle to lift up the auger and then just swing the PTO shaft into place.

Re: Can\'t get rear PTO hooked up

Pulling the collar back is correct but the PTO shaft is keyed. The easiest way to align the keyway is to place the pto in neutral and turn it slowly while pushing forward with the drive shaft. Plenty of grease is also helpful.

I had the same problem. The PTO cover hinges up out of the way, I discovered. Also, the shaft I got was used and not maintained. Cleaning it and regreasing it should go on the to do list. Shortrees

Re: Can\'t get rear PTO hooked up

Thanks Tom - You were exactly right. I was pulling back the black collar not realizing the metal collar inside was the one I should be pulling.

Thanks to everyone for putting up with a newbie's question -
