Can\'t Move It

My PT 425 won't start. I think it may be the needle valve in the carb and the shop is ready to work on it under warranty. The problem is I can't load it in the truck if the engine is not running. I called a car-hauling roll back and he is ready to move it to the shop. The problem is I can't load it on the roll back without the engine running. I talked to Terry at Power Trac and he told me to turn the knob under the front pump to allow the machine to free- wheel. The knob, nut, valve has a hole through it and Terry says to put a small screwdriver, 16 penny nail, or a center punch through the hole and crack the valve to allow the pump to be by-passed. Getting a small tool under the pump and through the hole is not to hard, but trying to move the valve has been impossible so far. Has anyone had this problem and any suggestions are much needed. Thanks Mac

Re: Can\'t Move It

Maybe there is some pressure on the valve. Try mashing the treadle pedals back and forth a few times. Also operate the joystick in all directions and tug on the steering wheel a bit in both directions. Then try the valve again. Don't force it. Hope this helps. /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

Re: Can\'t Move It

Hey, I just went through this!

Forgive me if this seems too obvious, but are you trying to turn the valve the right way? It can get kind of confusing when you are hanging upside down. Ask me how I know. /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

On mine, the valve had been tightened to the point I almost bent the screwdriver trying to loosen it. It took a lot of finger pressure under there to get it started.

On a related note, if you need to steer the beast, unbolt the steering rams at the front only. It will then be possible to steer it.

Let us know how it goes.

Re: Can\'t Move It

Since my old machine doesn't have this bypass mechanism (or at least, I haven't been able to identify the bypass ports on the hydrostatic drive pump), you essentially have two more choices.

1) Build some sort of dolly to put it onto, then roll it. Depending on whether it's on concrete or dirt, you could put some sort of dolly under each wheel (particularly if it's on concrete). If it's on dirt or grass, making 4 dollies with large pneumatic casters could get expensive. I once made one big dolly with 4 pneumatic casters...it was quite painful getting the tractor on it. I wouldn't recommend this approach except as a last resort.

2) Take the two hoses off each wheel motor and connect them together with a fitting. (Note: make sure you connect them together with a fitting...otherwise all the oil in the hydraulic tank will very slowly seep out through the hoses...you'll get a nice 10 gallon oil slick somewhere...) It was also be a really good idea to then attach a hose between the two ports on each wheel motor (keeps dirt out). You're looking at 4 fittings and 4 short hoses...this would get my vote (and this is what I'll do if I find myself in the same situation).

Dave
