Can\'t start the tractor

I rented a NH TN70F for the weekend to do some tilling. Everything was fine until I ran out of fuel. I put about 3 gallons of diesel fuel in and it turns over but won't start.

Everything’s in neutral and the PTO is not engaged. There is a push button on the left side near the dash that feels like it might be a primer.

Any help would be gratefully appreciated!

Thanks, Joe

Re: Can\'t start the tractor

Do you have the owners manual? What you need to do is bleed the fuel system and the owners manual will walk you thru the process. A diesel is not like a gas motor, when you run a diesel out of fuel that is considered a bad thing. The button on the side is for cold weather starting, it is not a primer.

Although some are self-bleeding...like the JD 4120 we bought /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif Nice feature. I hope I never have to worry about it though. I try to never let it go below 1/4.

Hopefully, by the time you read this you have got the tractor started.

Undoubtedly, the fuel system required bleeding. But since this is a rental unit, you'd be better off calling them to do the work or bring another unit out to replace the machine you rented.
Probably not a good idea to work on rental machines unless you are very confident in your abilities...or are willing to pay for any repairs.

Thanks to all. Bleeding the fuel lines is exactly what solved the problem. Never knew that happened when you ran a diesel out of fuel.
