Car Tires on Utility Trailer

Tire shops won't sell anything but trailer tires for trailers. Also, the MTO. Does regular inspections, and the OPP are diligent in pulling trailers over to inspect them. If you do it, you truly have more money than brains, as you will be csught and fined. Also, if you have a commercial sticker on your trailer, it WILL NOT pass inspection with out trailer tires.



Bottom line...IGNORANCE is no excuse.

Same thing here. They will not touch a trailer with LT or P tires on it. Its a liability thing. I have had to take the wheels off at home and haul them in to get them to put on LT tires on my old 25,000# GVWR GN. Everything elses, about 12 different trailers I have owned, I have ran SP radial trailer tires on.

I wouldn't say the OPP are all that diligent in inspected small trailers, I've never been stopped in many years of towing but none of my trailers are commercial.
Anyways I always find the smaller trailer specific tires to be total garbage, they crack after a few years, wear very fast, and have absolutely no snow traction whatsoever. I was towing my sled on a winding cottage road and kept having something catch my eye in the side mirrors in the corners and realized that the trailer was drifting sideways while I was driving pretty easy with snow tires on the car...
I borrow a 6x12 single axle trailer with 205/75R15 P rated tires and it handles 2 4x5 round bales or 3 4x4 bales quite well. No sway problems and the tires are wearing well with no damage issues.

My current Trailer tires are Radial. My new larger tires will also be Radial

Nothing but radials for trailers available in tire shops around here. When I asked a couple shops both told me same story. It wasn't worth their effort, the bias ply didn't last as long and road stiffer which was a problem on campers and most of their sales were for campers.

I just take my rim to our tire shop and ask for a used tire for my trailer. They don't see much long distance high speed highway use (100miles at 70mph is max) and last enough years to make me happy. If the trailer has brakes then I match the tires side to side, other wise close enough is good enough....

Over the years I've had lots of travel trailers with trailer tires. None have ever worn out due to mileage. I've had more blow out or have had separations in the cords than I can count. I have a homemade utility trailer with 10 ply 16.5 LT tires that has at least 50,000 KM on it without problems. My 25 foot 5th wheel has two 3500# axles and ate tires until I installed some 15" LT tires. After at least 20,000KM they still look good but I'm going to sell them at 5 years old and put on new ones.

same here.. at least the tire shops i use woun't put car tires on a trailer.. etc.. heck.. i have a hard enough time getting someone to put a used truck tire on a tractor rim.. have to do em myself 90% of the time..

This must be a regional thing. For example a 225 Bias 8 ply is about $65 around here when a Radial is $90.

It must be regional as you stated as I have found bias tires in the 225 size are about $15 more than radials. I have had bias on my equipment trailer (came with them) and I plan on doing a changeout to radials as the bias wear horribly and I have had more flats than I can count. My tire store has been pushing me to go radial on the trailer for some time.
