IMHO...
I would do the exact same thing you are doing...
Try your best to get the insurance company to replace the car with the same equivalent unit...
They always low ball on the first offer and it may take you a month or so to get the most out of them...
I still would have your son go to the doctor just to make sure everything was OK...
10 years ago my father was hit by a young man that fell asleep at the wheel head on...
The young man was killed but my father and his friend was unhurt...
They were driving back from delivering his tractor to get it rebuilt...
They were driving his Volvo class 8 dump truck...
My dad was not at fault and the insurance company, after several months of negation, did finally allow him to replace the truck with an equivalent value truck...
He signed a release form an all was well...
1 month later he suffered a stroke that blinded him in his left eye...
I am thankful that he was spared and still lives...
But I am convinced that the stroke and injury to his eye was caused by the sudden jolt of the crash...
The young man's car hit his truck so hard it crashed up under the drivers door and knocked the front axle back a couple feet...
This was on a class 8 truck...
No doubt my dad you have been killed instantly in any other type of vehicle...
