Carb question

Asking for a neighbor. He has a John Deere 240 that he wants to give to his son. Son just bought a small farm in Maine and needs a little help obtaining equipment.
Anyway, this little tractor has not run in a few years, he just doesn't need it anymore, hence the gift to his son. He was checking it out, putting in a new battery, etc. and it won't start. It runs fine on starting fluid, but will not stay lit. The jet to cut off the fuel is misshaped because he did not drain the gas.

The thing says 'FC420V-DS00' on the carb. It is certainly a Kawasaki engine. He was just going to install a new carb for his son. BUT:

As usual, John is quite proud of his parts, and wants $250 for the carb. A lot of Kawasaki folks say no problem, but they have an FC420V-DS01, but no one claims the DS00. The question to the guru's is: Is that the same Carb?

In case you need, the carb is a Mikuni. The number from the JD is M000240A595250

John says the rebuild kit has been discontinued, and by the time they added the parts, it was about 10% less than the carb! Go figure.

Any help would be appreciated.

IMO, the best gift to his son would be a JD 240 with a new carb... from John Deere.

Payback for not taking good care of it for the past few years.

So you are saying that God and John Deere are punishing dad for letting a JD sit unused for years?

I also noticed,on the internet, that the engine has a pulse fuel pump. You should check to make sure that the pump is working before you start on the carb.

Good info and we will look at which he wants to do, I expect he wants a new carb on it for his son. The other poster is asserting that only a John Deere carb would do, but I think we will go for Mikuni!

Not at all.. but their is a cost to neglect... all I'm sayin...

Neither God nor John Deere made this happen nor are either responsible. IMO

My apologies if my comments offend anyone, and do wish the OP well finding a cheaper solution that works.

The last four digits of the engine number should be inconsequential to the correct part for the engine. The last four digits serve to identify the "brand/type" of equipment in which the engine was originally installed. They should be irrelevant to the correct carb.
