Careful when transporting! Very scary accident while towing in PA.

A boy was struck by a sickle bar attachment while riding his bike outside Harrisburg yesterday. Secure your loads and keep an eye on your trailer while towing.



SILVER SPRING TOWNSHIP A teenage boy riding his bike was struck by a mower blade from a tractor that was being hauled by a passing truck Monday afternoon, police said.

Police responded to the accident along the 7000 block of Wertzville Road, just after 3 p.m.

Marlin R. Miller of Carlisle was driving a truck and flatbed trailer that had an old tractor with a side sickle attachment, police said.

The sickle broke and was protruding from the right side of the trailer. The teen riding his bicycle was struck by the sickle bar of the tractor, and was thrown onto the road, police said.

The teen was flown to the Milton S. Hershey Penn State Hershey Medical, where he is undergoing surgery and is listed in critical condition, police said.

The victim痴 name and age were not released by police.

The hauler most definitely should have dedicated more attention in regards to securing his load. One of the reasons that a vehicle has mirrors is to provide a way of watching the load that you are hauling. Utilizing mirrors aid the driver in spotting problems that may occur during transport. The report didn't state all the facts or possibilities that may have been responsible for this life threatening mishap, but it is a safe bet, that the load was not properly secured. Best wishes for the victim. I sincerely hope that his condition improves and that he doesn't have to live with a physical impairment that restricts his mobility.
