Hey guys,

Need some newbie help here. Does anyone have one of these engines that you could tell me where the glow plugs are located? Is the injector and glow plug one in the same unit? I'm trying to troubleshoot a hard cold start issue and want to check voltage. I dont see any wires going around where the injectors are though. That I can see, has fuel lines hoping to each one.

She smokes dark smoke while cranking, and takes a few minutes of fighting to get it started. Speed leaver to the max or idle doesn't seem to improve its chances in starting. I just have to keep cracking until it starts to fire enough to catch.

If someone could show me where they are that would be great. I can also take a picture of the engine and post it, if someone could point it out that way, that would be great as well. Any help appreciated at this point.

It looks to have the glow plugs in between the intake runners, they should be wired one to the other....

The injectors have steel lines going from pump to each one. The glow plugs have a flat bus bar going in straight line between all of them. Sounds like you need to check glow timer and relays.

I will have a good look at this engine when I get back there on Saturday. I will take a picture as well, I'm kicking myself for not already doing it as I said it to my self I need to do it before I leave and forgot! Thanks to you both for replying.

Ok.... Looks like they are exactly where you said they would be. I see the bus as well, it runs underneath the intake manifold. I took some pictures in case someone else has the exact same question on the same machine so I will post them here.

My next issue is now that I found them, are they working? With the key off, I took my volt meter and put one lead on the tip of the glow plug and another on the block, no voltage. I then measured from the tip of the glow plug to the positive on the battery, again with the key off, I have battery voltage showing up. I turn the key to the run position and redid my test, and the results are the same from glow plug to engine block and glow plug to positive on the battery.

How should they be energized because I don't think they are working. I'm assuming the glow plug lead should be positive voltage, but that throws me off when I get voltage touching the glow plug and the other lead on my volt meter to the positive on the battery and it showing me battery voltage. What's wrong?

Put a test lite from the bus bar going to ground when the key is turned to cycle them it should light up.

Going between battery and glow plug with meter only shows that at least one of the glow plugs is conducting to ground and not if they are working correctly or shorted.

Going between bus bar and block should show voltage when cycled if they are getting power.

Where would the timer and relay be located?

Shouldn't I get no voltage from the bus / tip of the glow plug to the positive on the battery, key on or not, it should be positive there and on the battery? That's what throwing me off I think.

When going from the glow plug to the battery with a meter the resistance of the glow plug is so low that it would look like a ground for the meter.

Timer and relay will be between ignition switch and engine usually up behind dash someplace.
