case 450

I am buying a case 450 track loader...the drive controls are a different than I have ever used....there are 3 levers up high between your legs one is forword and reverse the other two say high and low....steering is with the brakes ..I think ?? but down low there is a control lever on the left and right side on the floor, can anyone tell me what they are for ??? also where do you check hydraulic and transmission fluids...thaks in advance for any help .....bruce

You have forward and reverse... The other two are hi and lo for each track, that's mainly how you make hard turns, putting one side in hi and the other in lo... Many times you can make small turns by just taking one side out of gear (middle position)

On most old 450's the brakes don't work, but being a hystat machine, it will stop when you take your foot off the throttle.

IF you buy it, you NEED to spend the big bucks and buy the shop manual!! IMO it's a must!

There is a hand throttle by your right leg. The left knob has something to do with whether the transmission stays in gear when you press the brakes or goes to neutral. If you find a 450 with working breaks I want a video.
You steer with the high and low of the tracks.

Transmission fluid is checked and filled with the dip stick under the seat. The dipstick opposite of the fuel tank is the hydraulic oil.

They were notorious for leaky brake systems. We all carried a gallon can of brake fluid with us, if we were going to run the 450 for a spell.

And, those are dry brakes. If they are cleaned up, they work pretty decent. After a period of time in the dirt, dust will get in the brake chambers, and smooth operating brakes will go to grabby ones. Just touch the pedal, and WHAM, it locks the track. We worked straightening a lot of creek channels, and that was even worse for getting debris in the brake chambers.
