Just replaced the seasl in two of my cylinders and had trouble getting the gland nut back on the shaft of one. After all new seals, had trouble sliding on, had to use a piece of wood and hammer. The other one slid right on but this cylinder doesn't look to be OE. It was also tight coming off, Is this normal?

Thanks

Is it possible the one you are having trouble with had a new hyd rod made in the past?

Many OEM hyd rods on Case equipment are .010" undersized.......EI: instead of 1.500" rod size they would mic up at 1.490"........a 2" rod would measure up 1.990"

when a new hyd rod is made up the gland head has to be machined out the additional .010" to make up for the larger rod size.....if the gland is not machined out then the wear bands will be too tight giving you the trouble

You need a good set of calipers or micrometer to see the difference, best to mic up both for comparison

A light "slam fit" with a plastic mallet is acceptable, but more is too tight

I already have it back together and on the machine. Both rods mic at 1.750. I haven't run the machine yet. If the problem is the wear band being to tight, what will happen if I run it this way. Thanks for your help.

Sometimes on what I call dry wear bands (ones that are between the wiper and rod seal) rust can form enough to tighten the groove for the wear band

Not going to hurt anything to run it like it is, the nylon from the wear band will not score the hyd rod......just run it

did you have the metal press-in metal encased wiper or the split wiper/wear bands (2) one inside and 1 outside on the gland?

Does it look like the rods were replaced? usually the weld gives it away?

Rods look OEM, one tube was replaced. Split wear band. I think you are right about the rust build up, did see a small amount. Will be okay to run then? Will the wear band just wear itself in.

Thanks for the help

I'm new to this.

Yea, OK to run.....the job of the wear band is to keep the rod off the gland so it is doing the job....

BTW, we are all new to this...
